John Brand fonds

The fonds consists of Brand's correspondence with Rev. Falcon, who was serving as Cure of Cramlington in Brand's absence, as well correspondence with Nathanel Punshon, an attorney in Newcastle, and other documents concerning Cramlington. Fonds is bound in covers with "Rev. J. Brand Private Papers Mss." stamped on spine.

The collection consists of seven inventories, compiled for each Dorset parish, of the number of farmers, livestock, amount and type of crops (dead stock), number of servants who can be mounted on horseback, number of servants who can be armed with pickaxes and shovels. The inventories were collected by Lord Milton's Corps of Yeomanry Calvary, the volunteer Dorset Rangers. It seems likely that the inventory was prepared in anticipation of a French invasion.

Manuscript textbook on rhetoric and grammar, with text in Latin and examples in Latin and French. French examples include excerpts from the works of Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux, Jean Racine, and Antoinette de Lafon de Boisguérin des Houlières. Likely produced by a Francophone individual in the province of Lower Canada between the end of the eighteenth century and the War of 1812.

Lease by Hendrick van Aernum of Lansingburgh in Rensselaer Co., New York to Levinus Lansing of Lansingburgh, for five shillings New York money paid, granting to Levinus Lansing the piece of land lying in the patent of Stone Arabia, Rensselaer Co., for one year, paying one peppercorn in rent. Signed by Hendrick van Aernum. Dated 17 Nov. 1794. Witnesses, Daniel Marven and Richard Lansing.

There have been three accruals. The first accrual, which consisted of photographic slides and camera equipment, was deacessioned in July 2008. The second accrual (28-1996, 32-1996) measures 1 m, and is arranged into the following series: personal correspondence; legal correspondence and documents; Canadian Red Cross society; Samuel B. Freeman scrapbooks; memorabilia; certificates and awards; photographs and albums. It includes legal correspondence relating to the family property on 341 James St. South. The third accrual (29-1998) measures 3 cm and consists of correspondence, news clippings and a photograph.

Tokens such as these were issued in many places in England between 1787 and 1800 when the government failed to mint enough copper coinage for the conduct of business. One of the coins is a Samuel Johnson copper coin, the other is a Jack Lackington copper coin.

Manuscript is a fair copy of letters and accounts which were published as Letters, Remarks, &c. with a view to open an extensive trade in the article of tin, from the County of Cornwall to India, Persia, and China, compiled by George Unwin (London: W. and J. Stratford, 1790). The manuscript was owned with a print copy of the book (catalogued as <a href="http://catalogue.mcmaster.ca/catalogue/Record/807616">B18058</a> and part of the library of the future King George IV).

The additional letter explains that the ms copy was found with"some old papers" at the Board of Trade offices. The letter from a Mr. Williams was sent to William George Anderson, the Auditor of the Duchy of Cornwall (1851-1891).

This collection of prints and drawings visually documents France and its imperial ambitions, notably the end of the Ancien Régime (Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette), the French Revolution, Napoleon reign’s as Emperor and his defeat in 1815, and Napoleon III and the Second Republic. Descriptions of each print or drawing consists of the title (sometimes supplied), measurement, the names of the artist, engraver, publisher or printer, and the source (sometimes a previous collection or from a museum or publication).

Richard Nisbet manuscript

The manuscript is titled "Richard Nisbet's Navigation Book". A bookplate bearing his coat of arms and motto (Vis Fortibus Arma) with his initials is affixed to the pastedown of the front board. A smaller binder's mark is affixed in the upper left corner of the front pastedown indicating that the manuscript was bound by T. Hookham of New Bond Street [London]. The front board bears the word "Navigation" embossed in gold. The manuscript contains 177 pages of text with extensive geometric diagrams, some of which have been coloured. A sea chart of the area around the English Channel and Bay of Biscay has been tipped in near the centre of the manuscript.
