Peppiart about Stephenson’s enlistment, a letter from Edwin, 2 greeting cards from Norma (his sister), and a photocopy of a letter from Roy to Harry (Henry Arthur Stephenson, 22 October 1918); (11) 8 b&w photographs (several being reproductions), including group photograph of the Burlington Volunteers, 1st Canadian Contingent, and the grave site of A.T. The fonds consists of a scrapbook with items pasted in. There are also some loose items. There are a few items that pre-date the war such as Bessie’s Girl Guide certificate and Ronald’s choir membership card, as well as his Orderly certificate. Most of the fonds consists of sports and entertainment programmes. The theatrical programmes were mainly issued by the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) under the director of the Navy, Army and Air Force Institute (NAAFI). There is also a service dedication and two photographs for the Church of St. Luke, 115 British General Hospital, and one group photograph including Bessie.

This small collection consists of two long and detailed letters, and 34 photographs. The letters are written by an American serviceman to his mother relating what he has seen at Buchenwald following the war and during one of the trials at Nuremburg. He is only identified by his first name, Rolf. The photographs document the state of the places he was travelling: downed aircraft, troop movements, the countryside etc. In his letter about Buchenwald he references specific photographs, but these were not included as part of the archive.

The fonds consists of material created during Farr’s career. The McGill University Press material includes the initial proposal document, newspaper clippings, early design prototypes, and graphic materials produced by the press (page proofs, invitations, greeting cards, prints of R.D. Wilson artwork). The Ryerson Press material includes two logo blocks (publisher’s device), newspaper clippings, and various administrative files. Also included in the fonds: correspondence with Marsh Jeanneret, Donald Sutherland, Dick Wilson and W.H. Clarke from Clarke, Irwin & Co. Ltd.; photographs; an unpublished manuscript entitled The Crooked Axe: A Lighthearted Sketch of Canadian History to 1900 written by Farr in 2008 (unpublished at time of this description), and a copy of The Living Past of Montreal, McGill University Press, 1964, drawn by R.D. Wilson, described by Eric McLean.

Robert Percy Wright fonds

The fonds consists of three bound journals. Each journal is brown, stamped "Army Book 152. Correspondence Book. (Field Service)". The first journal contains entries from 15 May 1915 to 31 October 1915, as well as a spoof on Genesis from the Bible, some camp and other maps and drawings, and a biographical sketch of Wright written by himself including a long list of his athletic achievements. The second journal contains entries from 14 November [1915] to 30 August [1916], a list of his military leaves, maps, and one loose sheet of paper dated 13 June 1916. Wright was by then a Lieut.-Colonel. The third journal contains entries from 1 September 1916 to Saturday [2 December 1916] including some maps. Wright was stationed at the Vadencourt Chateau, and the third journal includes a building plan sketch and a map of the camp. The first journal is written entirely in ink; the other two journals are in ink and pencil. The journal entries begin with a weather description as does his official war diary. The fonds also contains Wright's official War Diary as A.D.M.S, 1st Canadian Division from 1 January 1918 to 31 December 1918. The diary is black and stamped "War Diary 1918". Each typewritten entry (except for the first few) has been initialled by Wright. In addition to the typewritten entries, the diary contains mimeographed orders, typewritten and mimeographed correspondence, maps and diagrams. There are 139 typed pages, 157 folio pages, and 10 maps.

Robert Kirkland Kernighan collection

Mary J. Mason was the sister of Kernighan. She was contacted after her brother’s death by F.E. Page of New Dundee in 1928 with regard to a memorial to her brother and later on for her memories of him. The fonds consists of three letters to Page, and a memoir of Kernighan’s life, death, and funeral (manuscript, 7 pages) sent to Page on 5 September 1933. Page was writing a life of Kernighan. In the memoir, his sister gives his date of birth as 1854. Note: Mason’s hand makes it difficult to read the name of her correspondent; “Page” is assumed but may not be correct.

The fonds consists mostly of photographs from World War II, with subjects including Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill at the Casablanca Conference; the Allied bombing of the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino; troop trucks, mule trains, soldiers and civilians. There are also photographs of the U.S. capitol in 1954 and personal photographs of family and friends. The textual records include correspondence, commendations, discharge papers, and certificates relating to Longini’s military career, as well as news clippings.
