Administrative history

The Royal Society of Canada was founded in 1882 by the Governor-General, the Marquess of Lorne. It is the country's oldest national organization of intellectuals dedicated to the encouragement of the humanities and sciences and the recognition of conspicuous merit.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the correspondence files of the Awards Committee. There is a file for each of the following awards: Bancroft Award, Chauveau Medal, Banting Medal, Marshall Tory Medal, Eadie Medal, Hannah Medal, Flavelle Medal, Harrison Prize, Innis-Gérin Medal, Lorne Pierce Medal, Miller Medal, Sims Scholarship, NATO Fellowships, Rutherford Memorial Award and the Tyrell Medal. E. Whalley of the National Research Council chaired the Committee in 1972. He was succeeded by A. D'Irio of the Faculty of Science of the University of Ottawa.
