Hamilton and District Labour Council fonds

The fonds consists mainly of the records of the Hamilton and District Labour Council from its formation in 1956 until 1994. There are also some records from the two bodies which preceded it as well as from the Canadian Congress of Labour Area Council. There have been two accruals.

The fonds consists of documents concerning the life of Richard Hoff in German and English. There are also family history documents, materials documenting the history of Breslau, and some issues of the “Freie Deutsche Jugend” [Free German Youth]. The second accrual (23-1996) consists of files from Allen's office in Queen's Park, covering the period 1982-1995. By and large this accrual consists of reports, briefs, news releases, press clippings, photocopies of internal memos, communiques, and printed matter. The original material consists of daily journals, correspondence to and from Allen to constituents and colleagues in the New Democratic Party, correspondence to and from federal cabinet ministers, holograph or typescript versions of speeches and notes. Frequently, incoming and outgoing correspondence is one of multiple copies. Original order has been maintained as much as possible in the arrangement of this accrual. The titles that appear on the files are the original titles. The series and subseries are organized in an attempt to reflect the career of Richard Allen: Series 1: in opposition 1982-1990; Subseries: Hamilton; education; Francophone affairs; Community and Social Services & Office of the Disabled; personal and administrative. Series 2: minister and member of government, 1990-1995. Subseries: Meech Lake and post-Meech Lake; Minister of Colleges & Universities; Minister Responsible for the Ontario Training & Adjustment Board; Minister of International Trade; Minister of Housing; Minister's administrative files. Series 3: sound recordings and videocassette, 1989-1995. It should be noted that a chronological arrangement within the sub-series has been attempted, in order to trace the prolific political endeavours of Allen. Box numbering in this accrual is sequential with the previous accrual. The third accrual (24-2000) consists of administrative files reflecting Allen's political activities sukch as council minutes, reports, election results, press releases and promotional materials. The accrual also contains files relating to GO-ALRT and the Canadian Porcelain Project.

There have been six accruals. Four accruals from the 1970s have been combined and consist of stage plays, radio and television material, his thesis on T.S. Eliot and other related works, articles and book reviews, poetry, and correspondence. The fifth accrual consists of stage, radio and television plays, poems and short stories, a book about creative writing, and correspondence. Sound recordings, moving images and photographic slides also form part of the fonds. They are been removed from their accruals and are stored separately.

There have been two accruals. The first accrual arrived in disarray. The only series containing files in their original order are the Estate Accounting series and 2 files in the Feinberg series. Organization had to be imposed on most other files because file labels bore no relationship to contents and contents were mixed. The fonds has been thus been organized into the following series: Organization of Russell Archives, Preparation of the Catalogue and Its Sales; Sale of the Archives; Sale and Continuing Relationship with McMaster University; Anton Felton Correspondence; Barry Feinberg Correspondence; Russell's Books and Articles; Publishing Projects Involving Other Authors; Film Projects; Legal and Financial; Estate Accounting; Russell Correspondence; Edith Russell Correspondence and Memorandum; Russell Biographical Information, Photograph, Meetings; Printed Materials. The second small accrual consists mainly of legal documents.

Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji collection

There have been three accruals. The first and principal accrual of the collection was compiled by his close friend and admirer, Frank Holliday. During the 1960s the composer agreed to allow Holliday to tape record him playing his own compositions. Their correspondence over a forty year period as well as the audio reels and cassettes are the core of this collection. The reels have been reproduced on audio cassettes for use by researchers. The number of audio cassettes listed above refers only to original cassettes.

Canadian scenes collection

The collection consists of engravings taken from The Illustrated London News, The Canadian Illustrated News, and one from Picturesque Canada: The Country as It Was and Is. There is also one engraving of the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara Falls, Ont. by Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). It is stamped “Printsellers Association” and written under the engraving is: “Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1875, by M. Knoedler & Co. in the office of the Librarian at Washington.” The printed scenes are from Toronto, Goderich and London. Several concern railroads. There is one of the Toronto harbour. All but one are in colour.

Pacifist Pamphlets collection

This collection of pacifist pamphlets also contains some correspondence (carbon typescripts), mimeographed agendas and minutes, newsletters, books and other materials. The majority of the materials are British. There are also some American, Dutch, and Canadian items. Publications by the Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Society of Friends form the two largest groupings in the collection.
