Series consists of various drafts, proofs, manuscripts, and typescripts of works such as theses, poetry, plays, articles, reports, essays and books that were sent to Russell. There are also several newspaper clippings. Some materials are inscribed and some are accompanied by correspondence. Topics are varied, and sent materials include works pertaining to Russell's philosophical and mathematical interests, his peace activities, and the Kennedy assassination to name a few. As noted in the print finding aid for Russell Archives 2: “Authors sent their works in progress on every conceivable topic to Russell. So did publishers with their prospective books. The self-published did the same. The result is that Russell had to develop a standard response to such requests for advice: that if he read all their works, he would have no time to write his own. Sometimes correspondence is attached to the item concerned. This class does not include large number of political works listed in other classes. It does include the original typescripts of the contributions to Bertrand Russell: Philosopher of the Century, edited by Ralph Schoenman.”

The collection consists of correspondence, photographs, post cards, maps, manuscripts, typescripts, orders and other official documents, diagrams, programmes, souvenirs, song-sheets, artwork, leaflets, sound recordings and moving images, and printed materials.

The collection consists of posters issued by the following British organizations: Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, London; Parliamentary War Savings Committee; National War Savings Committee; Joint Labour Recruiting Committee; Ministry of National Service; Navy; Imperial Maritime League; City of London; and Blue Cross fund. The collection also contains posters issued by the governments of Canada (includes Canadian Victory Bonds), France, United States and Germany. There are a large number of posters from Louvain, Belgium. There are also several posters issued by the German occupying forces in France and Belgium and the British occupying forces in Germany.

The collection consists of trench maps and aerial photographs created during the First World War. The majority of the maps were created by the British Ordnance Survey for the Allied forces, although a few German, French and other maps purchased privately by officers exist within the collection. As the collection is almost exclusively made up of British mapping, coverage is limited to the British sector of the Western Front extending from the English Channel in the north to the vicinity of Reims in the south.

The aerial photographs were produced by the [British] Royal Flying Corps (renamed Royal Air Force when it merged with the Royal Naval Air Service in 1918). However, a few French and German examples exist within the collection. Approximately 350 photographs in the collection have hand annotations ranging from simple circles indicating the location of important features on the recto to full, textual descriptions on the verso. Approximately 90 additional photographs are mounted in an Album acquired from the University of Alberta.

The collection consists of two collections of communications used during World War I. One collection is labelled “postal history”; the other is called “soldiers correspondence”. Both collections contain post cards of various types including official ones. The postal history collection is mounted on nine numbered sheets, and contains explanatory text typed on the bottom. It also has one letter. It may have been compiled by Keith Powell of the Guilford Philosophy Society, as his name is written on the back of each sheet. The soldiers correspondence collection is mounted on eleven sheets which are not numbered; it also has a title page. Explanatory text appears on each page; the text has been printed from a computer.

This collection contains posters issued by Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The posters have been numbered sequentially with prefixes of A, C, B, and U. Facsimiles and duplicates are noted in the finding aid. Subject matter varies: recruitment, Victory Bonds, activities on the Home Front to aid and protect the troops, gas attacks and bombs, ARP. Although this is mainly a collection of posters, there is one photograph (C24) and one calendar (C21).

The collection consists of communications from the War Office and other agencies during and after World War II. Box 1 contains a selection of British War despatches detailing troop movements and battle outcomes. These range from roughly mid-1941 to late-1942. Box 2 contains miscellaneous materials, including British casualty lists, special army orders, army council instructions, translated versions of the Fuehrer Conferences on Naval Affairs (from 1939-42, and 1944), documents from the Civil Aeronautics Administration exploring the state of the post-war British aviation industry, and a collection of radar bulletins from 1945. Several print periodicals are also included, such as the Egyptian Mail and the Supplement to the London Gazette. Finally, box 2 also contains numerous miscellaneous materials, ranging from items published by the British Ministry of Information during wartime to Air Ministry publications from during and after the war. Wherever possible, copies have been made of some of the more illegible material in an attempt to preserve readability.

Collection consists of items originating from prisoners held in German concentration camps, internment and transit camps, Gestapo prisons, and POW camps, during and just prior to World War II. Most of the collection consists of letters written or received by prisoners, but also includes receipts for parcels, money orders and personal effects; paper currency; and realia, including Star of David badges that Jews were forced to wear.

This is a small collection of posed group photographs of military and civilian units, the majority of which are mounted on board and list the individuals in each photograph.

Collection consists of original documents collected by David Diamant over a period of approximately 30 years dealing primarily with the Jewish segment of the French underground resistance; many of the documents originate with communist groups, and some deal with Polish groups. Most of the documents are in French, while some are in Yiddish.

Collection consists of over 1,000 air dropped and shelled leaflets and periodicals created and disseminated during the Second World War. The majority of items in this collection were printed by the Allies then air or container dropped, or fired by artillery shell over German occupied territory. Many leaflets and periodicals have original publication codes and were printed in over 10 languages. Only shelled leaflets, Germans to Allies (115 items), are in English.

To date, the collection consists of one item only, the newspaper La Voce De La Patria: Giornale Clandestino dei soldati italiani intelligent, February, 1945. This newspaper was also used as safe conduct for soldiers joining the partisans or the Allies.

Most of the documents are in French, while some are in Flemish or German.

Most of the documents are in French, while some are in Dutch.

Series relates to Russell’s involvement in international affairs, especially regarding issues of peace. By 1963, the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation had been established, and the affairs of the BRPF are also reflected here. Accordingly, there is some overlap with the BRPF series (311 onward). There is also overlap with series 640 Heads of State. The files are arranged alphabetically by name of country, and also include material relating to the United Nations. The U.S.A. files are the most voluminous and include sub-sections relating to ‘The Fallout Suits’ (Linus Pauling), the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Anti-Goldwater Campaign, and the International War Crimes Tribunal.

Included are correspondence (including letters to editors), circular letters, statements, news clippings, reports, speeches, leaflets, interviews, and newsletters; letters from Russell are typescript copies. Acquired as part of Archives 1.

Series consists of correspondence, circulars, meeting minutes, invitations, news clippings, statements, and booklets relating to Russell's interest in world government, and his engagement with groups such as the Parliamentary Group for World Government, Parliamentary Association for World Government, and World Association of Parliamentarians for World Government. Letters from Russell are typescript copies. Some of the material dated 1955 overlaps with series 600 Peace Activities.

The fonds is arranged into two series: correspondence and manuscripts received, and layout and paste-up materials for issues 1-5, Summer 1980 to Spring 1982. Researchers are also directed to the separate David McFadden fonds.

The photographs have been pasted into a scrapbook. Some of the subject matter of the photographs is as follows: dugouts at Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and other locations, wounded soldiers being assisted, Trump-Line, Maple Leaf Concert Party, athletic events including a horse show, baseball, track and field, boxing, tug-of-war, General Currie, Little Theatre in London, and Khaki University of Canada (London Branch).
