Humfrey Michell fonds

The fonds consists of a small amount of correspondence, McMaster University examinations, at least one typescript by Michell, as well as printed articles and news clippings. There is also a copy of a photograph "Louis Riel and His Associates [at] Fort Garry"; the copy was made in April 1914. It is annotated by Michell. The fonds is supplemented by publications which have not been catalogued or listed. They are located separately from the fonds.

The collection consists of 28 letters to Major John Fairfax-Blakeborough, mainly from Sir Alfred Pease, but also from other members of the Pease family; news clippings; a typed carbon by Pease concerning family history, dedicated to his children; and a typed carbon of a memoir of Pease by Fairfax-Blakeborough, published in April 1964. Fairfax-Blakeborough was an author and journalist who sometimes wrote under the pen name Hambletonian. He was born in Guisborough, Yorks. on 16 Jan. 1883 and, like Pease, was a member of the Cleveland Bay Horse Society. His books concern racing, hunting, and country life.

Indenture was printed and sold by Charles J. Hynes, Messenger Office, Prescott. Signed by Timothy and Julia Buckly, witnessed by James and John Buckly. The deed was registered by George B. Glasford, Deputy Register, County of Leeds
This indenture, which was cut into sections, has been repaired with backing paper.

Canadian school notebooks collection

The content of these notebooks was created by George Alfred Reynolds (Rennie) Gibbons of Sturgeon River, N.W.T., Robin Gibbons, and Frank Carson.

Rennie Gibbons kept his notes in a Pioneer Exercise and Diction book with an illustrated cover in orange of soldiers on horseback dated 14 Nov. 1899. The content, in ink, is eclectic with notes on the metric system, the wheel and the axle, algebra, history, language, and partnerships. Robin Gibbons kept his (?) notes in The Great West Exercise book, with an illustrated cover in red and green of a farmer ploughing with a cowboy on the side dated 30 May 1899. The content, in ink, is eclectic with notes on board measures, arithmetic and composition (including small essays). Frank Carson kept his notes in a Bulwarks book with an illustrated cover of a navy ship deck. The notebook was purchased at Whitfields’ Drug and Stationery Store in Whitby, Ont. The content, in ink and pencil, is eclectic. It appears to contain some accounts as well as notes on Germany, science, plant roots, arithmetic, and hydrostatics.

Charles W. Hall fonds

There has been one accrual. It consists of Hall’s manuscript diary, 8 paginated, 4 looseleaf foolscap leaves in length. A typed transcript accompanies the journal. The first entry is dated 11 December 1861: “The following is the diary of our passage from Dublin, to Hamilton. C.W.” The last entry is dated 1 February [1862] upon arrival in Hamilton: “The town is very prettily situated on a Bay called ‘Burlington’, and is about 70 miles from the ‘Falls of Niagara’, and contains about 25,000 inhabitants. Thus ends my diary.”

Dorset (England) manuscript collection

The collection consists of seven inventories, compiled for each Dorset parish, of the number of farmers, livestock, amount and type of crops (dead stock), number of servants who can be mounted on horseback, number of servants who can be armed with pickaxes and shovels. The inventories were collected by Lord Milton's Corps of Yeomanry Calvary, the volunteer Dorset Rangers. It seems likely that the inventory was prepared in anticipation of a French invasion.

E. M. Forster collection

The collection consists of letters to Reginald Popham Nicholson (1874-1950) and his wife, Mary Elinor Nicholson. Nicholson was a career foreign service officer. After his retirement he became the secretary of the Royal African Society and editor of its journal from 1932-1938 and then served in the Red Cross Foreign Relations Department, 1941-1943.

This collection of newsletters was written in London by John Farr and his son John Farr Junior between 25 June 1719 and 10 September 1720. They were sent periodically to Francis Thistlethwayte in Winterslow, Wiltshire. The number sent varies from five to fourteen per month. The content includes: military and naval affairs, especially the war with Spain; foreign news from Europe, Jamaica, Newfoundland, and the Americas; news from Scotland and Ireland; commerce and shipping movements; natural disasters such as earthquakes; criminal affairs, spies, murders and arrests; deaths and the funeral of Joseph Addison; legal reports, stock reports and quotations, South Sea Bubble, politics and Parliamentary affairs.

The most likely Francis Thistlethwayte to be a recipient of the newsletters was born in 1658 and attended New College Oxford. The date of his death is uncertain but his father, Alexander (1636-1715) was long-lived. John Farr signed one newsletter dated 12 December 1719. There is a note on the verso of the 17 December 1719 newsletter by John Farr Junior.
