The book is a fair copy of either notes or an existing book cross indexing scripture references in the Bible. it includes short notes and definitions, including dates covered by the various books and inconsistencies in the text.

Manuscript document issued by the Governor of the state of Maranhão in Brasil, José Thomas de Menezes. The document concerns the Portuguese in England. It is written on one leaf of paper, folded in half; the text covers 3 pages.

The fonds is arranged into eleven series: press cuttings; a literary log; miscellanies; books (tss., mss., proofs, related material); correspondence; other manuscripts (untitled and titled mss. and lectures); societies and clubs; George Augustus Henry Sala; book collecting and other personal matters (includes correspondence of Sir Robert Peel); photographs and illustrations; and oversize material. Also acquired with the Straus fonds are the following: a collection of his published books and books from his library (for a description of these, see the master file on Straus), which have been catalogued in Research Collections; a pottery monkey, ca. 1880, formerly in the possession of Sala; an oil portrait of John Baskerville by his niece, Miss Gillespey.

The collection consists of Cpt. Read’s First World War military maps and Active Service Testament. An 1808 map of Russia. A copy of Col. R. Meinertzhagen’s Birds of Arabia, which belonged to Cpt. Read’s son.

The collections contains:
A legal document; James Peters, Maury County, Tennessee, 16 August 1823, re dividing land and slaves;
A letter by Jno. (John) A. Collins, 4 October 1884, to Charles E. Chapman who had requested Collins’s autograph. In the letter Collins writes that he thinks Chapman may be related to Maria W. Chapman, an abolitionist. Collins writes of his memories of her activities in the Anti-Slavery movement.

Bargain and sale by John Jones of Niagara [Niagara-on-the-Lake] in Lincoln in the province of Upper Canada, tailor, and Jane, his wife, to Phinihas Howell of Niagara, carpenter, of a tract of land, with all buildings on it, on the north-eastern part of Lot 30 in the town of Niagara for £294. Jones had the land by letters patent, dated 16 Nov. 1804 (registered 7 Dec. 1804 in Book R, fol. 351). Boundaries of the property include Prideaux Street and the house of Elizabeth Thompson. Among the conditions of sale, for ten shillings, Jane Jones agreed to quitclaim her right to her dower. Dated at Niagara, 29 Jan. 1806. Signed and sealed by John Jones, Jane Jones, and Phinihas Howell. Witnesses, A[lexander] Cameron and J. Macdonell.

Fonds consists of Archibald Macdonald's journal. It takes the form of a bound manuscript, 363 pages in length, many of the pages left blank. Stamped on spine is "Macdonald Journal". The first entry is 7 February 1805 written in London, England. The last entry is 6 December 1839. Text runs from p. 1 to p. 117. At that point some pages have been cut from the journal. Page 358 contains an index to the contents of pp. 1-71. There is also text on pp. 357, 361-3. Journal is written either with different hands or one hand that varied greatly over time.

The fonds consists of letters that the brothers wrote to Adam White of the British Museum from 1837 to 1848. White was an Assistant in the Zoology Department from 1835 to 1863. Most of the letters are written by Robert. There is also a journal kept by an unidentified man (presumably a Stark) who was living in Cape Town, South Africa from 1830 to 1834. The unbound journal consists of diary entries as the author travels by horse and sometimes by wagon in the area around Cape Town in 1830 and 1831. He often goes to Stellenbosch. The journal has some editing marks in it; at one point the author notes that his father has suggested that he write a book. The diary breaks off in 1831. The final few pages deal with the author’s return from Bombay, India to Cape Town on the “Earl of Eldon” in the summer of 1834.

The fonds consists of letters and a print portrait. Only one letter in the collection has an identified recipient, Samuel Rose.

Additions to Poems on Several Occasions Canterbury: printed by J. Abree, 1740. The early nineteenth century owner of the book (which has been catalogued as a rare book (C2584), apparently had access to the papers of Mrs. Dixon's niece, Mrs. Eliza Bunce. It seems Mrs. Bunce saw this volume through the press and kept the original manuscripts; from these the owner copied a number of unpublished poems, and added some which were printed in the newspaper at later dates, and lines which were found in a copy of the book in the British Museum. Two leaves are bound in the book and do not form part of the page count above.

Fonds consists of seven series: ancestral records, personal correspondence, business records, photographic work, personal notes and manuscripts, diaries and ephemera and newspaper clippings. Material in this fonds is primarily English although there is correspondence in German and Arabic and newspaper clippings and an exhibition program in Japanese.

A folder of 7 loose pages with illustrations depicting fortifications and defensive structures. The drawings and notes are in at least two or three hands. Some of the explanatory text references page numbers in an as yet unidentified book.
