The fonds is arranged into eleven series: press cuttings; a literary log; miscellanies; books (tss., mss., proofs, related material); correspondence; other manuscripts (untitled and titled mss. and lectures); societies and clubs; George Augustus Henry Sala; book collecting and other personal matters (includes correspondence of Sir Robert Peel); photographs and illustrations; and oversize material. Also acquired with the Straus fonds are the following: a collection of his published books and books from his library (for a description of these, see the master file on Straus), which have been catalogued in Research Collections; a pottery monkey, ca. 1880, formerly in the possession of Sala; an oil portrait of John Baskerville by his niece, Miss Gillespey.

Franklin Charles Zurbrigg fonds

The fonds consists of two notebooks kept by F.C. Zurbrigg – one on meteorology and the other on bombing. There is also a b&w photograph of Zurbrigg with his plane, a Hudson aircraft, and an invitation from McMaster University to the unveiling of a memorial tablet in Alumni Hall bearing the names of all members of the University who were killed in World War II.

The fonds consists of letters from Maclean’s Magazine to Gardner during his time as a freelance writer with the magazine. The correspondence is mainly with Pierre Berton, but there are a number from other Maclean’s editors as well.

The fonds consists of Chisholm’s correspondence and legal documents he filed on behalf of the Six Nations. His correspondents included: two lawyers who acted as his agents in Ottawa; many Six Nations councillors; Government ministers; and archivists. The legal documents he filed include Statements, Memorandums and Petitions of Right. There are also copies of many documents that he researched in order to establish the historical record. These copies date back to 1763.

The fonds consists of a small amount of correspondence, McMaster University examinations, at least one typescript by Michell, as well as printed articles and news clippings. There is also a copy of a photograph "Louis Riel and His Associates [at] Fort Garry"; the copy was made in April 1914. It is annotated by Michell. The fonds is supplemented by publications which have not been catalogued or listed. They are located separately from the fonds.

There have been four accruals. The first accrual consists of correspondence with among others: William Jennings Bryan, Daphne Du Maurier, Stephen Leacock, Charles G. D. Roberts, Duncan Campbell Scott, Ernest Thompson Seton, and Bliss Carman; manuscripts by among others Archibald Lampman, Marjorie L.C. Pickthall, Charles G. D. Roberts; news clippings and photographs. The second accrual consists of news clippings. The third accrual is a letter by McCrae about Pauline Johnson. The fourth accrual consists of a letter and 2 postcards to Jean Deane, 1905-1906. The fonds was supplemented by McRaye's collection of mainly Canadian books, as well as presentation copies of books given to him by Ethelwyn Wetherald and Pauline Johnson. The books have been catalogued. A listing can be found in the master file. The Pauline Johnson archival material in the fonds was transferred to the E. Pauline Johnson fonds.

The fonds consists of a scrapbook with items pasted in. There are also some loose items. There are a few items that pre-date the war such as Bessie’s Girl Guide certificate and Ronald’s choir membership card, as well as his Orderly certificate. Most of the fonds consists of sports and entertainment programmes. The theatrical programmes were mainly issued by the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) under the director of the Navy, Army and Air Force Institute (NAAFI). There is also a service dedication and two photographs for the Church of St. Luke, 115 British General Hospital, and one group photograph including Bessie.

The fonds contains letters and cards written to Westhead while he was overseas. The letters are from Westhead’s wife, Maud Westhead, his brother, George Herbert (“Herb”) Westhead, his father, George Westhead, his mother, and his sister, May Brown, all written from 878 Windermere Ave., Toronto Ontario. Some letters from Maud are written from the Lakeshore Hotel in Picton, Ontario. Other correspondents include Art and Ethel Clarke, of Toronto, and other friends and family members. The fonds also contains photographs – four of Maud and two of Westhead’s nephew, Douglas Brown, one of which includes Herb Westhead.

The fonds largely consists of letters written by Edward to Blanche Frappier while Edward served at the HMCS Cornwallis, HMCS Stadacona, and HMCS Scotian shore-based training facilities in Nova Scotia. Letters were also written during Edward’s service on the HMCS Kenogami and the HMCS Glace Bay. These letters are addressed to Blanche while she resided in the Trinity Barracks in Long Branch, Ontario. There is one letter to Edward from Blanche, 26 July 1945.
