Frances Taylor - Letter to her granddaughter

The letter begins: "I am very pleased that you are interested in your great grandfather's life." The letter contains a biographical sketch of George Stephen Benjamin Jarvis, soldier, judge, and politician who was born in New Brunswick in 1797 and moved to Canada in 1809. He died near Cornwall, Ont. on 15 April 1878.

There is one letter from Smyth to Kenneth Wright, 19 November 1929. For additional letters written by Smyth, researchers are directed to the Eric Walter White fonds.

The collection consists of four accruals. The first accrual consists of 4 letters and 1 note from James to Edmund Gosse, 1 letter to Messrs. Clay, [?] & Taylor, 1 printed letter to his friends on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, and printed materials including the order of service for his funeral. The second and third accruals consist of adaptations of two of James' novels by other authors. The fourth accrual is a copyright registration document.

Consists of manuscripts and typescripts of works authored by Russell, including the following 3 series acquired with Archives 1 and 2. Since the acquisition of Archives 1 and 2, additional manuscripts have been acquired as part of Archives 3, or ‘recent acquisitions’. While not included in the physical extent for this series indicated above, these ‘recent acquisitions’ are listed in the online finding aid.

Includes manuscripts and typescripts of 50 books authored by Russell, beginning with German Social Democracy (1896) and ending with volume 3 of The Autobiography of Bertrand Russell (1969). Includes complete, or near complete manuscripts, as well as smaller portions of manuscripts; also includes some letters. Items are arranged primarily in chronological order. Most of the series was acquired with Russell Archives 1, with additional items acquired with Archives 2.

Includes hundreds of manuscripts and typescripts of Russell’s articles, essays, speeches, letters to editors, etc., including both those that were published and those that were not (many unpublished items now appear in The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell). The items begin in his childhood and end 90 years later. Also contains some related correspondence, including typescript copies and photocopies of outgoing correspondence. Most of the series was acquired with Russell Archives 1, with additional items acquired with Archives 2.

The article manuscripts are arranged in 2 overlapping chronological sequences within Archives 1 and Archives 2. RA1, boxes 3.34 to 3.75, contain documents dated 1878-1968. RA2, boxes 9.01 to 9.11, and 11.68, contain documents dated 1893-1966, with most of them dated 1945-1966.

Includes manuscripts and supporting documents relating to The Principles of Mathematics and Principia Mathematica (though most Principia manuscripts did not survive), as well as early work on the foundations of physics. Most of the documents are in Russell’s own hand. Also includes a few related letters. The series was acquired primarily with Archives 1.

Fonds consists of ten accruals. It includes correspondence, an appointment book, and family history research materials The second accrual (12-1998) measures 32 cm, and has been arranged into the following series: speeches, correspondence; political files; news clippings. The third accrual (29-1998) measures 1.7 m, and has been arranged into the following series and sub-series: correspondence (congratulatory, family, general, gubernatorial, literary, political, and research); manuscripts and typescripts (autobiographical, books, broadcast scripts, lay sermons, newspaper columns, novels, poetry, screen plays, speeches, stories, uncategorized); printed materials (military reports, news clippings including reviews of his works, programs, stamp covers); photographs; sound recordings. The fourth accrual (39-1999 and 41-2000) measures 20 cm, and has been arranged into the following series: correspondence, manuscripts and typescripts, and printed materials and photographs. The fifth accrual (11-2001) measures 12.5 cm and consists of audio cassettes, a speech typescript and a colour photograph. This sixth accrual (12-2002) measures 6cm and has been arranged in two series: correspondence; typescripts, programs, photographs and printed materials. The seventh accrual (15-2002) measures 5.5 cm and consists of two guest books and photographs of certificates. The eighth accrual (30-2002) measures 10 cm and consists of printed material and two photograph albums. The ninth accrual (14-2003) consists of three issues of Leather Lines: The Journal of the Leather Familty History Society. The tenth accrual (5-2005) measures 12.5 cm and consists of correspondence, honorary awards, and his death certificate and funeral services.

The collection also contained George Spater's book collection which has been catalogued.

Frank Russell personal items

Series consists of three journals (Jan-Oct 1880, July 1883-Feb 1884, and Feb-Aug 1884 and Jan-Feb 1890) belonging to Frank Russell; handwritten musical score with a song 'Little Frank Russell' (by his grandmother?); three poems in Frank Russell's handwriting, dated July 1883, Oct 1884 and Dec 1884; handwritten poems headed 'Granny to Frank, 1867’ and another in the same hand dated 1897; a poem in unidentified hand dated 1884; letter from Home Office (27 July 1911) enclosing copy of the Free Pardon granted in respect of Frank Russell's bigamy conviction; and manuscript and typescript copy of song lyrics presumably by Frank, headed ‘With Apologies to Messrs Moody & Sankey’. Acquired as part of Archives 1.

Their have been two accruals. The first accrual consists of correspondence, manuscripts, biographical information, news clippings, pamphlets, posters, scrapbooks, issues of Grip, 1873-1894, and engraving plates. The second accrual (16-1990) consists of a cartoon and photographs. The fonds was supplemented by many of Bengough's books which have been catalogued.

Kilmaster family fonds

The fonds consists mainly of invitations to social events, including assemblies, receptions, commencements, banquets and balls. There is a news clipping of a review of the play “Old Soldiers” put on by the Brantford Amateurs in the Stratford Opera House in 1885 in which both Kilmasters acted. Pauline Johnson also acted in this play. There are also programmes, the funeral notice (noted above), a trespass notice, dancing instructions, three letters, a few documents related to the Dufferin Rifles, Jolite Club meeting notices, several news clippings, and miscellaneous printed materials. Most of the activities took place in Brantford and surrounding towns. However, some invitations are from places in Michigan.

Rennell Rodd - Letter to Oscar Wilde

The recipient of the letter, Oscar Wilde, wit and dramatist (1854-1900) was a contemporary of Rodd's at Oxford. In 1881 Rodd published a book of verse, Songs in the South. Wilde had this book republished in the United States in 1882, when he was visiting there, by J.M. Stoddart & Co., of Philadelphia. The title was changed to Rose Leaf and Apple Leaf and Wilde wrote an introduction, "L'Envoi". The letter makes no reference to the book but was written to Wilde in the United States.

Sir Charles Haukes Todd Crosthwaite fonds

The fonds consists mainly of his correspondence with Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple Blackwood (1826-1902), 1st Marquis of Dufferin and Ava. Blackwood, a diplomat and administrator, served as Governor-General of India from December 1884 until 1888. He was awarded a marquisate for his service in India. Crosthwaite's letters are mainly holograph copies, presumably done by his secretary. There is other correspondence in the fonds.
