Biografie

Fraser Sutherland was born in Pictou county, Nova Scotia. He was educated at King's College, Halifax and Carleton University. He graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Journalism degree. He was a reporter and staff writer for several newspapers and magazines, among them the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail and the Wall Street Journal before he became a freelance writer and editor in 1970. He was the founding editor of Northern Journey from 1971-1976, a columnist for Quill & Quire, and the managing editor of Books in Canada. During 1981-82 he was Writer-in-Residence at the University of Edinburgh, and in 1982-83 he taught at David Thompson University Centre, Nelson, B.C.

His published fiction, poetry and criticism includes books such as The Style of Innocence (Clarke, Irwin, 1972), Madwomen (Black Moss, 1978), John Glassco: An Essay and Bibliography (ECW Press, 1984), The Monthly Epic: A History of Canadian Magazines 1789-1989 (Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 1989), Jonestown: A Poem (McClelland & Stewart, 1996), Peace and War, with Goran Simic, privately published, 1999, and The Making of a Name: The Inside Story of the Brands We Buy (with Steve Rivkin, Oxford University Press, 2004).

Fraser Sutherland passed away 28 March 2021 in Toronto.

The fonds consists of material related to Sutherland's writing, including the marketing, publishing and promotion of his works; material pertaining to speaking engagements and workshops; the works of other authors; and material related to his personal life and that of his son Malcolm Sutherland (1984-2009). The fonds contains correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and other material.

The fonds was acquired in the spring of 2005; the second accrual (2013-035) in August 2013; the third accrual (2017-011) in March 2017; the fourth accrual (2019-029) in 2019; and the fifth and sixth accrual in 2021 (2021-007); all from Fraser Sutherland or his estate.

Ordening

The first accrual (16-2005) is arranged into four series: correspondence; poetry; fiction, essays and plays; other authors’ manuscripts and teaching, workshops, exchanges and memberships.

The second accrual (2013-035) is arranged into seven series: correspondence; writing; The Making of a Name; The Man Who Stayed Afloat; manuscripts by other authors'; clippings and programmes; and audio visiual material.

The third accrual (2017-011) is arranged in the following 12 series: personal correspondence; business correspondence; writing; The Monthly Epic files; marketing, publishing, and promotional materials; reviews; readings; programmes; travel memorabilia; planning documents; philanthropy and religion files; and Malcolm Sutherland files.
The fourth accrual (2019-029) is arranged into seven series: correspondence; writing and editing; education; travel; notebooks, calendars, and personal material; Scottish-Canadian Literary Celebration; and legal. The fifth accrual (2021-007) is arranged into nine series: correspondence; writing and editing; education; fiscal; Little Magazines and Small Presses; Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia; dictionaries; miscellaneous; and Malcolm Sutherland files. The sixth accrual (2021-007) consists of digital files and is arranged into ten series: correspondence, writing, editing, travel, fiscal, dictionary, personal, audio-visual material, Alison Sutherland files, and Malcolm Sutherland files.
