David Helwig was born in Toronto in April 1938. After taking an undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto, he went to England, where he received an M.A. in 1962 from Liverpool.
After stints of teaching at Queen's University and working for CBC drama, he made the decision in 1980 to become a full-time writer. Helwig writes in all genres: novels, short fiction, poetry, plays, essays, and newspaper articles.

The fourth accrual (44-1995) is arranged into three series: correspondence; manuscripts and typescripts; and reviews of Helwig's books. Correspondence and reviews are arranged alphabetically. Following the correspondence files is a file of miscellaneous items including a 1992 calendar which was used by Helwig to record his appointments.
