The fonds consists of 9 letters and telegrams from Hank to his parents in Hamilton while he was in the RCAF, 1944-45; 4 letters from “Mrs. Murray” to Hank’s mother (Mrs. Murray was a Scottish relative of Hank’s Canadian fiancée, Jean Gilchrist, whom Hank visited while on leave), 1944-45; 4 letters from Betty Pearson (WAAF, RCAF, Bedfordshire, England) to Hank’s mother, 1945; and 9 letters and cards from various officials and individuals to Hank’s parents after Hank was reported missing in action. Also includes a photograph of one of Hank’s crewmates (Leslie Payne), and related documents.

H.C. Hass photograph album

The album contains photographs belonging to Flight Officer H.C. Hass, RCAF, at Air Observer School #8, Ancienne Lorette, Quebec in 1942-1943. Typically at an AOS, trainees took a 12-week course on aerial photography, reconnaissance, and air navigation, which included 60 to 70 hours of practical experience in the air. The album illustrates Norwegian trainees, New Zealand and Czech liaison officers, wings ceremonies, mess scenes, the hockey team, buildings, planes, as well as scenes in Quebec City. In addition there are photographs of the Quebec Conference in August 1943, including Winston Churchill, Mackenzie King and others; also two photographs of Princess Juliana of the Netherlands making presentations. The album measures 28 x 40 cm and contains 18 leaves with approximately 126 photographs. Most photographs are 8 x 11 cm but some are as large as 25 x 21 cm.

The letters are from Rt. Hon. Arthur Meighen (1874-1960), Prime Minister of Canada, 1920-1921 and 1926; Vincent Massey (1887-1967), Governor-General of Canada, 1952-1959; John Hylan, Mayor of New York city; and William Maxwell Aitken, Baron Beaverbrook (1879-1964). There is also an autograph by Arthur Meighen.

There are also some printed materials, some of which concern the Wright family. There is one letter.

The fonds consists of Griffith’s in-flight navigator’s reports of bombing raids over German targets, detailing height, speed, temperature, instrument checks, unusual incidents, bomb release time, course flown, special instructions, and observations, and corresponding course maps. Fifty-two of the maps included in this fonds are World War II Bomber Charts, namely Topographical Maps, Lattice Topographical Maps, Radar Plotting Charts, Plotting Series Maps, Aeronautical Maps, and Canadian Air Navigation Charts. There are also three notebooks.

The fonds also contains an air force uniform (Pilot Officer jacket, trousers, felt “long johns,” two Royal Air Force “blue shirts.”); Griffith’s shoulder boards and air force and officer hats; 5 navigation protractors (3 of which are handmade); various patch badges including air force, army and naval items; and sample plexiglass from an aircraft window; a sample of airframe; field wound dressing (unused); and a sewing kit, for buttons, badges, and repairs.

There is also biographical information about Griffith and his crew (including the correspondence to Kennedy from Bath and an article from McLean's Magazine, September 2009 describing Operation Gisela); Leave Guide for London (a YMCA brochure), an issue of Time and Tide: Independent Non-Party dated 14 April 1945; 7 annotated photographs of the Halifax III and its crew, a Crew Roster for the 76th Squadron RAF for the week ending 22 December 1944.

The collection appears not to contain any materials relating to Benevides in World War II. There is a newspaper clipping containing a photograph of her and other Flight Officers in Metz; four group photographs with no date or location noted; an invitation to a base handover ceremony in 1967; a semaphore sheet with Benevides name written on the top; 3 desk signs. The remainder of the collection bears no obvious connection to Benevides. The majority of it is Air Force related however. It includes a photograph and programme for National Air Force Day in Rockcliffe in 1964; a photograph taken at the Officers’ Mess in Downsview in October 1943; photographs of air force personnel and airplanes including a jet; a Christmas card sent from the 3rd Wing, RCAF Station Zweibrücken; military sports day programs and crest, 1945; and other items. Not Air Force related: photograph of officers in the Elgin Regiment in Britain, 1943; photograph of four officers, one with his wife at a garden party in August 1942 (Major H. Duff. Lt. and Mrs. J.
