The fonds consists of material created during Farr’s career. The McGill University Press material includes the initial proposal document, newspaper clippings, early design prototypes, and graphic materials produced by the press (page proofs, invitations, greeting cards, prints of R.D. Wilson artwork). The Ryerson Press material includes two logo blocks (publisher’s device), newspaper clippings, and various administrative files. Also included in the fonds: correspondence with Marsh Jeanneret, Donald Sutherland, Dick Wilson and W.H. Clarke from Clarke, Irwin & Co. Ltd.; photographs; an unpublished manuscript entitled The Crooked Axe: A Lighthearted Sketch of Canadian History to 1900 written by Farr in 2008 (unpublished at time of this description), and a copy of The Living Past of Montreal, McGill University Press, 1964, drawn by R.D. Wilson, described by Eric McLean.

Sin títuloIn contrast to mainstream publishers that distribute, sell, and advertise quality printed books, journals and newspapers commercially in standard formats, small presses are modelled on alternative forms of publishing in which writers take control of all aspects of publishing their work. Print runs are invariably small and difficult to find. Works that are printed are often experimental in nature and embody a literary aesthetic. In Canada the small press movement flourished especially in the 1960s as an outgrowth of the literary renaissance of that time. Some small presses from that era such as Coach House Press, Oberon Press, and House of Anansi are now considered to be mainstream.
This collection consists of catalogues, announcements, and ephemera from approximately 245 small presses in Canada. Several presses in this collection such as Broadview Press and Red Deer College are academic in nature.
The collection consists of letters written by Nations to Beth Jankola when Nations was living in Vancouver and running Strange Faeces. There are three letters, 1974-75, with enclosures. The enclosures consist of printed notices re poetry and other readings. Also in the collection: a play “Patients, Patients” by Dannnie Loreno and two printed poems by Brad Chisholm, 1975.

This accrual was received with a book collection and issues of Saturday Night from the 1930s and 1940s with a few earlier issues. The third accrual (02-2003) is organized into 3 series: Editorial correspondence; Writers Files and Awards and Letters to the Editor. When the magazine suspended publication in 2005, all files at St. Joseph Media offices were removed; they did not come to McMaster. The fourth accrual (27-2007) consists of printed materials re the history of Saturday Night compiled by George Fetherling. The fifth accrual was compiled by Frank Moher, former editor at Saturday Night. Accrual includes articles Moher edited during his time at the magazine, as well as his own work.
