Frank Norman Walker fonds

There have been two accruals. The first accrual (13-2009) consists of a variety of materials documenting Walker’s professional career and interests including medical correspondence, published off prints and early sketches of a dissected rabbit (1913). There are also page proofs and preparatory material on Daylight through the Mountains (1957), political memorabilia and speeches. There is also general correspondence, of which a highlight is a carbon copy of letter to Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent dated August 27, 1951 proposing the building of a National Library with a signed reply from St. Laurent dated August 31, 1951. The second accrual (77-2009) consists of research materials gathered and compiled by Walker on Frederic Newton Gisborne (1824-1892), an engineer and inventor, for his proposed book, "Cables of Confederation". There is also a copy of a letter to former premier, Joseph R. Smallwood, 1966; printing blocks; and spoons.

There is also a b&w photograph of Zurbrigg with his plane, a Hudson aircraft, and an invitation from McMaster University to the unveiling of a memorial tablet in Alumni Hall bearing the names of all members of the University who were killed in World War II.

They include an American woodock in its nest; a grasshopper sparrow on a branch, a common tern approaching its nest; eggs in the nest of a veery; a luna moth; a yellow lady’s slipper (2 copies); lily pads and flower. Exhibition cards are pasted on the verso of two of the photographs.

There have been five accruals. The first accrual consists of correspondence, artist's proofs of wood engravings, limited editions, sketches, sketchbooks, free-hand drawings on tracing paper, news clippings and keepsakes as well as manuscript material, photographs, slides and audio cassettes. This accrual of the Brender à Brandis fonds was accompanied by a donation of some of his book imprints. The collection has been catalogued for Research Collections. The accrual (1.45 m) is arranged into 5 series: personal correspondence; manuscripts; news clippings and ephemera; graphic material; sound recordings. The second accrual (53 cm) consists of pencil, pen and ink, charcoal drawings and sketches, watercolour paintings, artist's proofs, limited editions and other prints done in the linocut and wood engraving technique. A book which accompanies this accrual has been catalogued for Research Collections. The accrual is arranged into 3 series: drawings; paintings; engravings. The third accrual consists mostly of graphic material, as well as a few clippings, two reel to reel films, and some additional monographs which have been added to the Division's collection. The fourth accrual consists of personal correspondence from Gerard Brender à Brandis and other members of his family to Donald Bragg, graphic materials, and seven books which have been added to the Division’s collection. The fifth accrual consists mostly of graphic material and engraved woodblocks. There are 167 wood engraving prints, along with 43 engraved woodblocks, a small number of photographs, and DVDs with tours of Brender à Brandis’ workshop.

Fonds consists of 50 items, most of which are letters to Clarke concerning military matters falling under his control as Secretary at War. Several of the letters were sent to Clarke from Mullingar, where the English army established a military depot in 1690, and were received in various places as he moved through the countryside: at Dublin (Mar. 1690); Limerick (Aug. 1690); Cashells (Sept. 1690); Dublin (Nov. 1690); Clonmel (Dec. 1690); Kilkenny (Dec. 1960). Other letters concern Clarke’s personal affairs, with letters from his mother (who nonetheless also informed her son of military matters, as her husband had also been Secretary at War) and from the women who managed his manor at Kilkenny during his absence.

The albums were filled by his father with every document and photograph that could be found of his son’s life.
