The fonds consists primarily of Fred’s correspondence to Margaret and his parents. Additionally, there are a number of photographs taken while he served, and documents from his life. As well, there are a number of highly detailed maps first from his training and then from the war. The fonds consists of four series: correspondence; photographs, military service and miscellaneous; and maps.

There have been two accruals which have been combined. The fonds is arranged into the following series: Correspondence; Published Work; Unpublished Material. The fonds contains various drafts of Morton's major books, manuscripts, editorial work, reviews, articles and lectures, unpublished manuscripts, research files, and material relating to Morton's teaching and conference participation. The fonds was supplemented by books from his library which were catalogued for the general stacks.

There have been two accruals. The first accrual contains the typescript of the Tupper book which has been annotated by Margaret Marshall Saunders as well a typescript of an unpublished work by her, "Poor Phoebe". There is correspondence relating to the Tupper book, including correspondence between Edward Saunders and Sir Charles Tupper (1821-1915). Tupper was a physician from Nova Scotia who briefly served as Prime Minister of Canada in 1896. There is correspondence gathered as part of the research of the Tupper book, including one undated letter from Sir John A. MacDonald (1815-1891) to Tupper. There is also correspondence to Margaret Marshall Saunders, mainly from the 1930s. This accrual also contains photographs and news clippings. This accrual was supplemented by books owned by Margaret Marshall Saunders. They have been separately catalogued. The second accrual is a letter, 28 March 1894, from Margaret Marshall Saunders to Faith Fenton.

George Clarke

Fonds consists of 50 items, most of which are letters to Clarke concerning military matters falling under his control as Secretary at War. Several of the letters were sent to Clarke from Mullingar, where the English army established a military depot in 1690, and were received in various places as he moved through the countryside: at Dublin (Mar. 1690); Limerick (Aug. 1690); Cashells (Sept. 1690); Dublin (Nov. 1690); Clonmel (Dec. 1690); Kilkenny (Dec. 1960). Other letters concern Clarke’s personal affairs, with letters from his mother (who nonetheless also informed her son of military matters, as her husband had also been Secretary at War) and from the women who managed his manor at Kilkenny during his absence.

The fonds contains manuscript material from the three volumes of Newman’s Hudson’s Bay Company histories, which have been heavily annotated by Martin Lynch. In addition, there is correspondence between Newman and the Lynches on specific chapters as well as more general matters.

There have been two accruals. The first accrual arrived in disarray. The only series containing files in their original order are the Estate Accounting series and 2 files in the Feinberg series. Organization had to be imposed on most other files because file labels bore no relationship to contents and contents were mixed. The fonds has been thus been organized into the following series: Organization of Russell Archives, Preparation of the Catalogue and Its Sales; Sale of the Archives; Sale and Continuing Relationship with McMaster University; Anton Felton Correspondence; Barry Feinberg Correspondence; Russell's Books and Articles; Publishing Projects Involving Other Authors; Film Projects; Legal and Financial; Estate Accounting; Russell Correspondence; Edith Russell Correspondence and Memorandum; Russell Biographical Information, Photograph, Meetings; Printed Materials. The second small accrual consists mainly of legal documents.
