Neil Armstrong fonds

Fonds consists of cassette tapes containing recordings of interviews conducted by Neil Armstrong of prominent Black and Caribbean artists, authors, poets, publishers, academics, and politicians for the York University student radio, CHRY 105.5FM. Interviews cover topics such as Black and Caribbean history, literature, community events, international work, and more. Interviewees include The Honourable Lincoln Alexander, Dionne Brand, Afua Cooper, The Honourable Rosemary Brown, Austin Clarke, George Elliott Clark, Louise Bennett (Miss Lou), and others. Some tapes have interviews or speeches made by these individuals outside of a CHRY interview.

Tapes were numbered in accordance with the original order upon arrival. Note: The “A” or “B” following the tape number reflects which side of the tape the recording may be found. Tapes without an affixed letter contain only one recording.

There have been six accruals. The first accrual consists of manuscripts, correspondence, and Weed/Flower Press materials. The second accrual (17-1997) consists of manuscripts, correspondence, Weed/Flower Press materials, juvenilia and oversize. The third accrual (13-2000) consists of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, and printed materials. The fourth accrual (13-2005) has been arranged in the following series: manuscripts, typescripts and proofs; correspondence; manuscripts by others; personal documents and other materials (includes photographs); posters. The fifth accrual (05-2011) consists of Ball’s business archives as an antiquarian bookseller of Canadian literature: William Nelson Books (1972-1985); Nelson Ball, Bookseller (1985-2010). The sixth accrual (2016-029) consists of manuscripts, typescripts and proofs for books of poetry and some prose.

The collection consists mainly of Waffle materials, although there is a small amount of New Democratic youth and general materials. It contains news letters, statements, discussion papers, petitions, press releases, news clippings, and some minutes.

Niagara Falls Suspension bridge collection

The collection consists of three letters from the Great Western Railway Co. to J.W. Fisher, Superintendant of the bridge, 1854-55. There are also two letters, 1862, addressed to William G. Swan, Suspension Bridge, Clifton, Ont. and one invoice from Wood & Leggatt, 1873. Finally there is a letter to C. Strut, 1848, with regard to the lumber contract for the bridge.

Several of the photographs document young men who served in World War II. They include an unidentified soldier in front of a 2nd/10th Dragoons vehicle. This regiment was based in St. Catharines as well as Hamilton and Brantford and did not serve overseas. There are five photographs taken by a soldier who built bailey bridges over the Aller and Weser rivers, who was a member of the 147 football team, and who was photographed in a former P.O.W. camp with a Nazi swastika near Onasbrück, Germany. The versos of all these photographs have descriptions of the events depicted. There are three photographs of Matt Wilkinson whose trade in the army was that of a blacksmith. There is also a postcard photograph of the Ravens Hotel in Schleswig, Germany where he was billeted. Also in the album are a group of news clippings about Flying Officer Alexander Jamieson Muir (1920-1944) who served in the 626 Squadron. There are no identified photographs of him in the album, although there are ones of Jack and Don Muir, presumably his cousins. There are two pages photographs of the Victoria Rifles Company in May 1944. A Montreal regiment, it embarked for Great Britain on 20 November 1944. Its Niagara connection is unclear. Also in the album are family, wedding, vacation photographs of Wasaga Beach as well as photographs of various locales in the Niagara region.

No-Conscription Fellowship

Series consists of correspondence among members of the No-Conscription Fellowship, of which Russell was a leading member; the group opposed conscription in Britain during the First World War. Also includes circulars, forms, proposals, reports, and flyers. Acquired as part of Archives 1.

The collection consists of 4 poems: one is a manuscript, "Lake Memphremagog" and was written there in August 1941. The other three are typescripts : "Laurentians in Summer", "Until we Meet" and "Easter ... 1941...". Duncan has noted on the Laurentians typescript that it was pulbished in the Montreal Star "last week". The Easter typescript is signed.

The first accrual consists of the following items: trench maps, picket diaries, paybooks, notebooks, postcards, photographs and other items.The second accrual consists of two commemorative items: a certificate of recognition and commemorative photo of Allatt in a 35th Battalion mount.

North-West Rebellion Scrapbooks

The first was compiled and annotated by Theodore Henry James Charmbury, who was a photographer in Saskatchewan. It consists of clippings and 41 photographs. A detailed description of the scrapbook and the material found therein is included in the box.
The second scrapbook is a collection of contemporary newspaper clippings about the Rebellion, pasted over the account book of James McDowell, an agent of The Ontario Mutual Life Assurance Co., London. The material was pasted into the ledger sometime after 1883.

Nuclear disarmament

Series consists of material reflecting Russell’s activity and leadership with such groups as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), the Committee of 100, and other peace organizations and protest groups. Included are correspondence, drafted and official statements, news clippings, forms, and minutes as well as copies of booklets, leaflets, flyers, circular letters, and bulletins. Includes correspondence with Canon L. John Collins, among others. Correspondence of Russell’s secretary, Ralph Schoenmann, who was heavily involved in the formation of the Committee of 100, is also included. Letters from Russell are typescript copies.

Acquired with both Archives 1 and Archives 2. The print Archives 2 finding aid reads in part: “Beginning in 1962, these files continue the CND files of Archives I. then there is a file of detailed draft and official statements concerning the split between Russell and Canon Collins. Russell subsequently resigned from CND. The files continue with Committee of 100 documents--letters, statements, mimeographed minutes, etc.--ending shortly after Russell's resignation as President of the Committee early in 1963. A second box is full of leaflets and other printed ephemera.”

Obituaries of Russell

As noted in the print finding aid for Archives 2: “This large collection of published obituaries [Russell died on Feb. 2, 1970] is based on the clippings supplied to Lady Russell or Christopher Farley by the International Press Cutting Bureau. … Russell's Middle East statement of 30 January 1970 was the subject of press comment at the same time, and a number of clippings on it have been preserved.”

The collection consists of letters written by Nations to Beth Jankola when Nations was living in Vancouver and running Strange Faeces. There are three letters, 1974-75, with enclosures. The enclosures consist of printed notices re poetry and other readings. Also in the collection: a play “Patients, Patients” by Dannnie Loreno and two printed poems by Brad Chisholm, 1975.
