    Biografie

    E. Togo Salmon, classics scholar, was born in London, England on 29 May 1905. He was educated at the University of Sydney and Cambridge University. He came to McMaster University in 1930 as an Assistant Professor of Classics. In 1954 he was made Messecar Professor of History and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He served as the Principal of University College from 1961 to 1967 when he was appointed Vice-President (Academic) Arts, a position he held until 1968. He retired from McMaster University in 1973 and died on 11 May 1988.

    There have been four accruals. The first accrual consists of offprints of Dr. Salmon's many articles, his degrees and awards. There is also one letter from Cesare Canessa to Arthur J. Evans of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, dated 6 December 1893. This accrual was supplemented by eight books from Dr. Salmon's library which have been catalogued. The second accrual contains articles, reviews, speeches, correspondence, awards, photographs and other documents. The third accrual is Salmon's Cambridge University thesis. The fourth accrual contains seven letters from Salmon to Eric D. Tappe.

    The first accrual (46-1992) was acquired from his wife, Marina Salmon in October 1992. The second accrual (37-2004) was acquired from the estate of Marina Salmon in November 2004. The third accrual (47-2007) was acquired from Howard Jones in April 2007. The fourth accrual (63-2008) was acquired from Geoffrey Thursfield in October 2008.
