    Edward Manning Saunders, clergyman and historian, was born in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia on 20 December 1829. He was educated at the Newton Institute, Mass. He was appointed pastor at the first Baptist church in Halifax in 1867. His published works include Three Premiers of Nova Scotia (1909) and The Life and Letters of the Rt. Hon. Sir Charles Tupper (1916). He died in Toronto on 15 March in the same year as the Tupper book was published.

    Margaret Marshall Saunders was born on 13 April 1861 in Milton, Nova Scotia. She was educated at an Edinburgh, Scotland finishing school, followed by a year in France. She wrote about this experience in Esther de Warren: The Story of a Mid-Victorian Maiden (1927). This was her last published work and her personal favourite. Her most successful book was Beautiful Joe: The Autobiography of a Dog (1893). Saunders was awarded an honorary M.A. from Acadia University in 1911. For the last thirty-three years of her life she lived in Toronto. She died on 15 February 1947.

    Portée et contenu

    There have been two accruals. The first accrual contains the typescript of the Tupper book which has been annotated by Margaret Marshall Saunders as well a typescript of an unpublished work by her, "Poor Phoebe". There is correspondence relating to the Tupper book, including correspondence between Edward Saunders and Sir Charles Tupper (1821-1915). Tupper was a physician from Nova Scotia who briefly served as Prime Minister of Canada in 1896. There is correspondence gathered as part of the research of the Tupper book, including one undated letter from Sir John A. MacDonald (1815-1891) to Tupper. There is also correspondence to Margaret Marshall Saunders, mainly from the 1930s. This accrual also contains photographs and news clippings. This accrual was supplemented by books owned by Margaret Marshall Saunders. They have been separately catalogued. The second accrual is a letter, 28 March 1894, from Margaret Marshall Saunders to Faith Fenton.

    The first accrual was donated by Lorne Pierce in May 1944; the second accrual (04-2006) was purchased from John Rush Books in January 2006.
