    Biographical history

    David McFadden, poet and travel writer, was born on 11 October 1940 in Hamilton, Ont. He worked as a proofreader at The Hamilton Spectator from 1962-1970 and then as a reporter from 1970 to 1976. He published his first book of poetry, The Poem Poem in 1967.

    In 1978 he left Ontario for British Columbia, serving first as writer-in-residence at Simon Fraser University and then, from 1979-1982, as instructor, Fred Wah School of Writing, David Thompson University Centre, Nelson, B.C. He returned to Ontario as writer-in-residence at the University of Western Ontario, 1983-1984. His Gypsy Guitar (1987) was nominated for a Governor General's Award. In 2013, he won the Griffin Poetry Prize for his 2012 anthology What's the Score?

    McFadden passed away on June 6th, 2018 at the age of 77.

    The first accrual was acquired in September 1969, the second in April 1972, the third in January 1989, the fourth in January 1999, the fifth in March 2011, all from David McFadden.

    Arrangement

    There have been five accruals. The first and second accruals have been combined and arranged into the following series: correspondence-incoming; correspondence-outgoing; material related to The Hamilton Spectator; literary works; personal and financial papers. The third accrual (04-1989) measures 4.9 m and has been arranged into the following series and sub-series: correspondence; journalism at The Hamilton Spectator--article typescripts and proofs, research notes and printed materials, photographs, correspondence, administration and awards, newsclippings and scrapbooks; manuscripts typescripts and proofs--books, books and other works by others, reviews, other genres; financial, travel, promotion; addresses and phone messages; photographs; printed materials; artwork, audio tapes and realia. The fourth accrual (01-1999) measures 4.9 m and has been arranged into the following series: correspondence; electronic correspondence and teaching; manuscripts, typescripts, and proofs; financial, travel, promotion; addresses, phone messages, business cards; photographs and artwork; printed materials and miscellaneous. The fifth accrual (14-2011) consists of manuscripts of three travel books.
