        Naomi Mitchison, writer and playwright, was born on 1 November 1897 in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was educated at St. Anne's College, Oxford. Her early writings were primarily historical novels, beginning with The Conquest in 1923. Mitchison has also been active politically, supporting the Labour Party. She published an autobiography, Mucking Around: Five Continents over Fifty Years in 1981.
