Biografie
Charlotte Stopes, Shakespearean scholar and supporter of women’s education, was born in Edinburgh and was educated informally at Edinburgh University before women were officially allowed to attend. She married Henry Stopes, an architect, civil engineer and anthropologist in 1879. The Stopes were the parents of Marie Stopes, birth-control advocate.

The letter from Charlotte Stopes to James Graham is dated 26 February 1889 and was found inside Stopes’s book, The Bacon-Shakspere Question Answered (London: Trubner, 1889). The book also contains an inscription from Stopes to Graham. The letter recollects that they met at a British Association meeting in 1876 and that Graham offered assistance with the advancement of the cause of women.

The letter (10-2002) was purchased with the book at some unknown date. The letter was found in February 2002 inside the book which was located in Mills Library general stacks. At that time the letter was removed and re-located to Archives and Research Collections while the book remains in the library general stacks (PR2939.S7). A photocopy of the page containing the inscription has been made and is located with the letter.
