Vivian de Sola Pinto was born in 1895 and educated at Oxford in classics and English, though his studies interrupted by World War I. After spending some time at the Sorbonne, he was appointed chair of English at Southampton. In 1938 he took up the chair of English at Nottingham University in its first year of incorporation where he remained until his retirement in 1961. Pinto was also an author, critic, and poet – a champion of the unorthodox and non-conformist strain in English literature. He published works on Sir Charles Sedley, Peter Sterry, and Rochester. He edited a collection of poems by D.H. Lawrence and played a leading part in the bicentenary celebration of William Blake. He also published an autobiography, The City Than Shone. Pinto died on 27 July 1969.

Merle R. Tingley was born on 9 July 1921 in Montreal and educated at the Valentine School of Commercial Art. He was editorial cartoonist with the London Free Press from 1947 to 1986, using the pen name of Ting. During his career he won many national and international awards; his cartoons were collected and published several times, beginning in 1957.

Thomas Arnold (1795-1841), theologian and historian, was born on 13 June 1795 on the Isle of Wight. Educated at Winchester College and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, he is best known as the headmaster of Rugby School which he turned into one of the best schools in Britain. He was appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford in 1841. He died at Rugby on 12 June 1842.

Matthew Arnold, (1822–1888), poet, writer, and inspector of schools, was educated at Balliol College, Oxford. His best-known work is the poem "Dover Beach". He died on 15 April 1888 in Liverpool.

Charles William Jefferys was born in England in 1869. He moved with his family to Canada around 1880. Jefferys had a long career as a newspaper, magazine and book illustrator. He also taught for many years in the Department of Architecture at the University of Toronto. His most well known work is the three-volume Picture Gallery of Canadian History (1942-1950). He died in 1951.

Harry W. Snelling was born in Woolich, England on October 14, 1849. In March 1867 Snelling enlisted in the 60th Royal Rifles, 1st Battalion. Snelling and his battalion were sent to Canada to assist with the Riel uprising in 1870. Following his armed service, Snelling became involved in the operation of a small Montreal store. He married a woman from Ireland, named Jane (4 May 1840-, and they had a daughter Isabella Caroline (25 Sept. 1879-). Between 1891 and 1901 the family moved from Montreal to Kingston where he was the Manager for a telephone company. He was still alive in 1921 when the census was conducted.

James R.H. Hille was an autograph collector who lived in Leigh-on-Sea, England.

Charles W. Hall was born presumably in England and was a member of the 93rd Derbyshire Regiment. On 11 December 1861, he boarded the steamer H.M.S. Windsor in Dublin, Ireland and set sail for Liverpool. On 12 December 1861, Hall transferred and served aboard H.M.S. Australasian, another steamer, and along with a regiment of 850 and an artillery of 270, set sail for Canada. 1 February 1862 marked Hall's arrival in Hamilton, Ontario.

Dick Sheppard was born in Windsor on 2 September 1880 and educated at Marlborough and Trinity Hall Cambridge. In July 1914 be became Vicar of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields church. He came to be well known for his religious broadcasts. In 1929 he became Dean of Canterbury. He was one of the founders of the Peace Pledge Union in 1936. He died suddenly in London on 31 October 1937.

Léon Hennique was born in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe on 4 November 1850. At the age of nine he moved to France where he received much of his formal education. He received educational training in Brest and Saint Quentin, and from 1865 to 1869 in Paris at the Jesuit school de la rue de Vaugirard. Hennique tried his hand at painting but did not find it as rewarding as writing. He was a novelist, playwright, journalist and a man of letters. His first published work appeared on 20 March 1876 in The Republic of Letters. Hennique followed the Naturalist school of thought, contributing several works to this literary movement.

Hennique was a close friend and associate of Emile Zola and the brothers Goncourt. He was a member of the Group of Médan presided over by Zola. Hennique assumed the presidency of the Goncourt academy from 1907 to 1912. He was also involved in developments in the Théatre-Libre in Paris. He was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1895 and was also named an Officer of the National Order.

James Graham Harrison at the time of writing this manuscript was a hospital patient in Concord, New South Wales, Australia. He appears to be a writer of local history with particular concentration on Bendigo, which is near Melbourne, Victoria.

Edward Burnaby Greene, poet and translator, was the son of Edward Burnaby and Elizabeth Greene Burnaby. On the death of his aunt, 30 December 1740, while he was still an infant, he inherited his grandfather's fortune. An Act of Parliament the following year allowed him to assume the surname of Greene. He was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. His literary attempts, both translations from Greek and Latin poets as well as imitations of Thomas Gray and William Shenstone, are not well regarded. He died on 12 March 1788.

George Bernard Shaw, playwright, was born on 26 July 1856 in Dublin, Ireland and educated at the Wesley Connexional School. He began his writing career as a novelist. His first play, Arms and the Man, was produced in 1894. He went on to become a prolific playwright and the chief dramatist of the twentieth century in the English language. He died at his home, Ayot St. Lawrence, Hertfordshire, on 2 November 1950.

Claude Guillot served as a volunteer in a military company in France in the late eighteenth century.

David Gagan was born in Toronto in 1940. He grew up in Owen Sound, Ontario and completed both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in history at the University of Western Ontario. In 1969 he graduated from Duke University with a Ph.D. in history. He came to McMaster University in 1970 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of History and became a full professor in 1980. His administrative career began in 1981 as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, a post he held until 1991. In 1992 he accepted the position of Vice-President, Academic at the University of Winnipeg. In 1996 he moved to Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. to become Vice-President, Academic. He is the author of three books as well as many articles and reviews.

David Gagan served as editor of Canada: An Historical Magazine, from its inception in 1973 until the last issue in 1976. The magazine was a joint venture by McMaster University and Holt, Rinehart and Winston of Canada to create a good non-academic Canadian history magazine. The magazine was given a three-year trial period to make itself self-supporting, and it failed. There were 12 issues in all: vol. 1 no. 1 (autumn 1973) to vol. 3, no. 4 (June 1976).

Faith Fenton was the pseudonym of Alice Freeman, a Toronto schoolteacher. Because the journalism profession was at that time considered disreputable, Freeman took on a pseudonym, in order to keep her teaching job. She both taught school and wrote for the Northern Advance and then the Empire until 1894 when she devoted herself exclusively to journalism, becoming the editor of the Canadian Home Journal. During the Klondike Gold rush she wrote articles from the Yukon for the Toronto Globe. She married Dr. John Brown in 1900, moved back to Toronto, and continued to write.

Millicent Garrett was born at Aldeburgh, Suffolk on 11 June 1847 and educated at a school at Blackheath. In April 1867 she married Henry Fawcett, Professor of Economics at Cambridge and Member of Parliament. Because of her husband's blindness Millicent shared his working life even more than would normally be the case. The couple had one daughter, Philippa, born in 1868. Henry Fawcett died in 1884. Millicent Fawcett was a tireless leader in the struggle for women's suffrage, serving as president of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies from 1897 to 1918. She published her autobiography, What I Remember in 1924. She died in London on 5 August 1929.

Nora Mabel Duncan, nee Dann, was born in 1881. She published a few volumes of poetry with the North Shore Press in North Vancouver, B.C. The poems in this collection were presumably written while she was on vacation in Quebec. In 1908, she married banker Wallace Craig Duncan (1871-1937). They had two daughters in Calgary, before moving to Vancouver. She was on a train, headed west to attend her daughter's wedding when she suddenly collapsed and died.
