Combined Universities Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

The Combined Universities Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CUCND) was founded in the late 1950s. In December 1964 it was succeeded by Student Union for Peace Action (SUPA) which was concerned with a wide range of social issues, not simply nuclear disarmament. SUPA's head office was in Toronto but there were branches on many university campuses in Canada. SUPA projects included work with blacks in Nova Scotia, poor whites in Kingston, Ontario, native peoples in Saskatchewan and Doukhobors of Nova Scotia, and anti-Vietnam protests and marches. By the winter of 1965 SUPA was an exhausted organization and was beginning to fall apart. From late 1965 to 1967, SUPA's role consisted mainly of supplying literature from its Research, Information and Publications Project (RIPP). SUPA was formally dissolved in September 1967 and succeeded by the New Left Committee which lasted until the summer of 1968.

Ontario Woman's Christian Temperance Union

The first branch of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in Ontario was founded in December 1874 by Letitia Youmans in Picton. The first Ontario WCTU convention was held in 1877. By 1883 a Dominion WCTU was established by representatives from Ontario and Quebec. The name of the national organization was changed to the Canadian Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1925.

Iron Molders' Union of North America. Local 28 (Toronto, Ont.)

The Iron Molders' Union of North America (prior to 1881 known as the National Union of Iron Molders) established five locals in Canada before 1859: Montreal, local 21; Hamilton, local 26; Toronto, local 28; Brantford, local 29 and London, local 37. By 1870 there were thirteen other locals, stretching from Halifax, Nova Scotia to St. Catharines, Ont. The activities of the Canadian locals in the later part of the nineteenth century are well documented in the Iron Molders Journal.

Hamilton Chamber Music Society

The Hamilton Chamber Music Society was founded in 1952 under the joint auspices of the Fine Arts Department of McMaster University and the Hamilton Conservatory of Music in Hamilton, Ont. Its first president was Reginald Godden, pianist, composer and teacher, who had been principal of the Hamilton Conservatory since 1948. The Society organizes concerts at which chamber music is performed by musicians of international stature as well as local musicians.

It was the main organization behind the Opération McGill demonstrations and in the mobilization against Bill 63, as well as Opération Congrès. It ceased activity in 1970.

The Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) was founded in March 1963 to promote the establishment of an independent Québec. Pierre Vaillières jointed the FLQ in 1965 and provided its philosophical underpinnings. The group used radical tactics, being involved in over 200 bombings between 1963 and 1970. In 1970 the FLQ kidnapped cabinet minister Pierre Laporte and British trade commissioner James Cross. Laporte was later murdered. The FLQ, many of its members in prison, ceased activity in 1971.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) was founded in Ottawa in 1961 by the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), affiliated unions of the Canadian Labour Congress, and New Party clubs. It is a democratic, socialist party.

In 1969 the Waffle was established as a caucus in the New Democratic party. Led by Mel Watkins and James Laxer, it was militantly socialist and nationalist. Forced to leave the NDP in 1972, it operated independently until 1974.
