John served with 1 Land Forces as a 2nd Lieutenant and was also wounded. He returned to service with the 19th Battalion and the Hampshire Regiment, where he served with distinction. When the Second World War began, John joined the Ontario Regiment, Canadian Tank Brigade, in command of the 2nd Company as a captain and served throughout the war.
Cullen served with the Queen’s Own Regiment in the first contingent. He was wounded three separate times at: St. Julien; during the Somme campaign; and at Vimy Ridge. After his convalescence he returned to the Front each time. In 1917 he was assigned to the Royal Flying Corp and was sent to Alexandria, Egypt for flight training. He died in a freak plane crash, 3 February 1918.
Major F.F. Arndoli served with 57 Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery while they were in northern Russia, 1918-1919. He went on to serve in the Second World War.
P.F. Cronin, a journalist, came to Canada in 1887 from Ireland in 1887. He first worked for the Toronto Empire and later on for the Catholic Register. Edward Blake (1833-1912) was a Canadian lawyer and politician, who became premier of Ontario in 1871 before moving on to federal politics. In 1892 he abandoned Canadian politics for British, serving as the Nationalist member for South Longford in the British House of Commons until 1907. He died in Toronto in 1912.
William Cole was born on 22 April 1934, the son of Raymond Cole and his wife Elaine Cole, in Kitchener, Ont. Bill Cole pursued a theatrical and musical career. He performed with the Stratford Festival, the Spring Thaw Review and the Charlottetown Festival. He also did some directing and recorded one record. In later life he sang with the Kitchener Waterloo Philharmonic Choir. H also taught high school briefly. He married Hilda Neeb in August 1957; the couple had two children, Trevor and Valerie, later divorcing in 1982. Bill died in December 2005.
William Rogers was a yeoman living in or near Albion, York township, Upper Canada. On 13 December 1837 he was arrested and charged with treason. In all 422 people were arrested in the Home District. He was tried in the Court of Oyer and Terminer on 18 April 1838 and acquitted (“Return of the Names and Quality of Station of the several person, arrested and placed in confinement in the Prisons of Toronto, etc.; printed by the House of Commons, 25 Feb. 1839).
James Joyce, novelist and short story writer, was born in Dublin on 2 February 1882 and educated at University College, Dublin. His collection of short stories, Dubliners, was published in 1912. He wrote two famous novels, Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939). He died in Zurich on 13 January 1941.
Born on 3 November 1893, Arthur Stanley Bourinot was a poet and lawyer. After completing his education at the University of Toronto and his legal training at Osgoode Hall, he was called to the bar in 1920. He practised law in Ottawa until his retirement in 1959. He produced more than a dozen chapbooks of poetry between 1915 and 1966. He won the Governor General's Award for Under the Sun (1939). Bourinot was also an active member of the literary community in Canada. He edited the Canadian Poetry Magazine (1948-54 and 1966-8) and Canadian Author and Bookman (1953-4, 1957-60). He died on 17 January 1969.
Gordon Bottomley was an English poet and playwright, born in Keighley, Yorkshire on 20 February 1874 who began his working life as a bank clerk. He died on 25 August 1948 in Oare, England.
Healey Willan, composer, teacher, organist and choirmaster, was born at Balham, London, England on 12 October 1880. He was educated at St. Saviour's Choir School, Eastbourne. In 1913 he moved to Canada to become head of theory at the Toronto Conservatory and organist at St. Paul's church. The following year he was appointed lecturer at the University of Toronto. In 1919 he was appointed music director of the Hart House Theatre, a post he held until 1925. In 1921 he became precentor of St. Mary Magdalene church where he established the high-church music tradition through the use of plainsong and Renaissance music. He stayed at St. Mary Magdalene until his death in Toronto on 16 February 1968. His other posts included: Vice-Principal of the Conservatory, 1920-1936; professor at the University of Toronto, 1936-1950; University organist, 1932-1964.
Agnes Butcher (1915-), pianist and teacher, premiered the concerto dedicated to her on 24 August 1944 in a broadcast performance in Montreal for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation with the orchestra conducted by Jean-Marie Beaudet. These same performers later recorded the concerto for release on the CBC IS Canadian Album No. 1, RCA DM-1229. The first public performance of the concerto was held in November 1944 with Butcher being joined by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ettore Mazzoleni. Sometime before 1984 Butcher changed her surname to Boucher.
Charles Wilkinson was born in England in 1909. He worked in London's Fleet Street before emigrating to Canada. His first employment at The Hamilton Spectator was as a copy editor. He was appointed religion editor there in 1963. He retired in 1985. An interview with Wilkinson appeared in The Spectator on 16 February 1985. He died on 2 May 1994 in Hamilton, Ont.
Daniel Wilcox and his descendents resided in Hagersville and Caistorville, Ontario, and other nearby towns and villages, from the mid-nineteenth century onwards.
Gordon White was a nature photographer. He was both a fellow of the Photographic Society of America and an associate of the Royal Photographic Society. This is designated by the abbreviations F.P.S.A. and A.R.P.S. which appear on his photographs. He lived in Port Colborne, Ontario. His photographs of birds and plants were exhibited in both the United States and Canada in various venues, including at the American Ornithologists’ Union.

Katharine Birkmyre was the daughter of Rev. Canon Thomas Skelton (1834-1915). She was married to Henry Birkmyre who was possibly connected to the firm of Birkmyre Brothers, a jute and linen manufacturer. The couple lived at 67 Cadogan Gardens in London.
