Garamond Press was founded in 1981 and was the first independent Canadian publisher to specialize in books in the post secondary market. The original company directors were Peter Saunders, Errol Sharpe, Brenda Roman, Lois Pike, Richard Swift, and Michael Kelly. The press began as a collaboration between two independent Canadian collective presses, Between the Lines and Women's Press and a sales agency representing Canadian publishers in the college market, Fernwood Books, another founding partner was the owner of a print shop known as Muskox Press. The founders were conscious of the need for a progressive, critical and Canadian-controlled sector in college level publishing. Books were published in subjects such as globalization, social work, communication studies, cultural studies, history, labour studies and women's studies. In 2005 Garamond Press was sold to Broadview Press of Calgary. In 2008, University of Toronto Press (UTP) officially purchased the Broadview Press publishing lists in Anthropology, History, Politics, and Sociology, as well as the Garamond imprint. A new division called UTP Higher Education continued publishing in 2009.

In October 1927, five companies (McClary Manufacturing Company, London, Ontario; Sheet Metal Products Company of Canada Limited, Toronto; Thomas Davidson Manufacturing Company Limited, Montreal; E. T. Wright Limited, Hamilton, Ontario; and A. Aubry et fils Limitée, Montreal) merged to form General Steel Wares (GSW) Limited with John C. Newman becoming the company’s first President. The newly formed company, producing housewares and appliances, became a significant Canadian manufacturer. Expansion soon followed, notably, in 1920 with the acquisition of the Happy Thought Foundry Company of Brantford, Ontario, and in 1958 with the purchase of the Easy Washing Machine Company Limited.

Beatty Brothers Limited, a metal farm implement company established in 1873 at Fergus, Ontario, gained a controlling interest in GSW in 1962 through a reverse takeover, thereby merging these two companies under the GSW name. The company changed significantly at this time under the direction of Ralph M. Barford and Robert A. Stevens. Among other acquisitions by GSW between 1965 and 1975 was the Moffatt Company in Canada, a large appliance manufacturer, in 1971. Negotiations between GSW and Canadian General Electric Company Limited resulted in 1976 in the formation of the joint venture Canadian Appliance Manufacturing Company (CAMCO). More recent acquisitions have included the American Water Heater Company in 2002.

The Geochemical Society was founded on 7 November 1955. The purpose of the Society is to encourage the application of chemistry to the solution of geological and cosmological problems. It is an international organization, based in the United States, with its membership predominantly university professors. The Society honours outstanding contributions by individual scientists annually by presenting the F.W. Clarke Award, V.M. Goldschmidt Award and the Clair C. Patterson Award. Its principal publication, co-sponsored by the Meteoritical Society, is Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta.

Guernica Editions was founded in 1978 in Montréal, Québec by Antonio D’Alfonso. The company is dedicated to the bridging of cultures in Canada and publishes both original works and translations in three languages, English, French, and Italian. Guernica is named after the Spanish city of Guernica which was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. The firm has published over 300 titles and 500 authors from around the world. Antonio D’Alfonso was born in Montréal in 1953 and is a graduate of Loyola College and the Université de Montréal. In addition to his work in publishing, he has written several books, and has been a literary critic and film maker.

H.M.S. Amethyst belonged to the Sixth rating in the Royal Navy, that is the lowest rating. It carried 28-24 guns, and was known as a donkey or jackass frigate. It was classed as a Spartan, along with five other ships, and carried 240 men. The guns were located on the upper deck, the quarter deck, and the forecastle. The keel was laid in April 1843 and the ship was launched on 1 October 1845. Beginning in 1864 it was lent out for commercial purposes. In 1869 it was sold to the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company.

H.M.S. Carnarvon was a Devonshire-class cruiser of 10,850 tons built for the Royal Navy in 1905. She served in various capacities prior to the start of the First World War, where she was assigned to Cape Verde Station to protect British ships. In October 1914, the Carnarvon was transferred to the South Atlantic where she was part of the Battle of the Falklands, December 1914. Throughout the rest of the war she continued to patrol against German raiders and escort convoys. In 1919, it became a training ship, before being sold for scrap in 1921.

The City of Hamilton's Act of Incorporation in 1847 allowed for the appointment of a Chief Constable and an unlimited number of sub-constables. Three were initially appointed. Over the years as the population grew, so did the police force. In 1872 responsibility for the force was transferred to a Board of Police Commissioners. In 1973 the Hamilton Police Force was replaced by the Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Police.

A waterworks for Hamilton was first proposed in 1836. A competition was held in 1854 for waterworks designs. The first pump went into operation in 1859. By 1916 the original engines were being used only as standby units. The engines last ran in 1939. The original waterworks has now been restored and is operated as a museum.

The Hamilton Chamber Music Society was founded in 1952 under the joint auspices of the Fine Arts Department of McMaster University and the Hamilton Conservatory of Music in Hamilton, Ont. Its first president was Reginald Godden, pianist, composer and teacher, who had been principal of the Hamilton Conservatory since 1948. The Society organizes concerts at which chamber music is performed by musicians of international stature as well as local musicians.

The Hamilton Club was founded in 1872 to provide a gentleman's club in the city of Hamilton, Ontario. It has been located for its entire history at the corner of Main Street East and James Street South. The first chairman of the Club was Isaac Buchanan. Women were first admitted to the Club in 1960.

The Real Estate Board in Hamilton, Ont. received its official letters patent in 1921. It is a non-profit organization, responsible to its members who are brokers and realtors. There is a voluntary board of directors. The main service that the Board provides to its members is to provide a listing service of properties for sale.

The Hamilton Spectator's first issue was published on 15 July 1846 in Hamilton, Ont. It was founded as a semi-weekly, the first newspaper in what became the Southham chain. Recently there have been ownership changes; the current owners are TDNG Inc., a subsidiary of Torstar Corp.

Hamilton Steel Wheel Company Limited was incorporated in 1916 by letter patent under the first part of the Companies Act with its head office in Hamilton, Ontario. Both certificates are stamped "cancelled". It was a subsidiary of Dominion Foundries and Steel Limited. The two merged in 1917.

The Hamilton Trades and Labour Council was formed in 1888. It belonged to the larger Trades and Labour Congress of Canada. In 1939 the Trade and Labour Congress of Canada expelled all industrial unions. In September 1940 eleven international unions and the Steel Worker's Organizing Committee (later the United Steelworkers) affiliated to form the Canadian Congress of Labour (C.C.L.). These national events were reflected at the local level in Hamilton, Ont. by the formation in 1941 of the Hamilton Labour Council C.C.L. National unification of the Trade and Labour Congress of Canada and the Canadian Congress of Labour was followed on the local level by the merger of the Hamilton Trades and Labour Council with the Hamilton Labour Council to form the Hamilton and District Labour Council in 1956. The Hamilton and Scourge were two wooden schooners which sank in Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. Their location on the lake bottom was discovered in 1975. In 1981 the City of Hamilton created the Hamilton-Scourge Foundation for the purpose of fund-raising. In 1983 the Project was formally organized by the City to undertake research with particular emphasis on the raising and exhibition of the ships. There is a book about the two schooners by Emily Cain, Ghost Ships: Hamilton and Scourge: Historical Treasures from the War of 1812 (1983). As of 1997 there is insufficient funding to finance the raising of the ships.
