Military Service Local Tribunals were set up throughout England during the First World War to hear pleas for exemption from military service. Grounds for exemption included poor health, essential work, family circumstances or conscientious objection. Diss is located in Norfolk, England.

The members of the Saarlouis Theatrical Committee were G.M. Sheppard, P.G. Diplock, E.J. Edward, H.W. Crook, K. Ashcroft, and W.T. Stevens. All of the men were with the British military; several of them held the ranking of lieutenant. From March to December 1918, the Committee staged fifteen productions, including variety shows, orchestral shows, and fancy dress balls, all but one of these in Saarlouis, France (now Germany).

H.M.S. Carnarvon was a Devonshire-class cruiser of 10,850 tons built for the Royal Navy in 1905. She served in various capacities prior to the start of the First World War, where she was assigned to Cape Verde Station to protect British ships. In October 1914, the Carnarvon was transferred to the South Atlantic where she was part of the Battle of the Falklands, December 1914. Throughout the rest of the war she continued to patrol against German raiders and escort convoys. In 1919, it became a training ship, before being sold for scrap in 1921.

The East Timor Alert Network campaigned for a shift in Canadian foreign policy to support human rights and self-determination for East Timor. It was a volunteer organization founded in 1986 in British Columbia and later incorporated as a non-profit group. Its national office moved to Toronto in the early 1990s, with one part-time staff person hired in 1996. In 1997, ETAN groups split to form two groups. After a short dispute over who would keep the name, the national office in Toronto, board of directors and some local groups formed Canadian Action for Indonesia and East Timor (CAFIET). The organization wound down operations soon after the end of the Indonesian occupation of East Timor in 1999.

Railway maintenance of way workers were responsible for keeping railway tracks in good running order. Track foremen had begun to organize in the United States as early as 1891. The forerunner of this union was the Brotherhood of Railway Trackmen of America.

The Lodge was affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Trades and Labor Congress of Canada. The charter was granted to ten individuals holding the ranks of: President, Vice-president, Past-president, Conductor, Chaplain, Warden, Conductor and Sentinel.

The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan was an ambitious program to train air crew members in Canada for the Allied war effort. An agreement by Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand on 17 December 1939 set up the program. In addition to those nations, Norwegians, Belgians, Dutch, Czechs and the Free French were trained.

Lloyd's Register was formed in 1760. Starting in 1764, it published an annual list stating the condition of all sea-going merchant ships of 100 gross tonnes or more. Ships remain in the registry until they are sunk or scrapped.

St. Mark's Church, Niagara-on-the-Lake, is the oldest Anglican community in the Diocese of Niagara, established by the first resident missionary of Niagara, Rev. Robert Addison in 1792. The church, completed in 1810, was burned during the war of 1812 and rebuilt in 1816.
