Lloyd's Register (1760-)
Lloyd's Register was formed in 1760. Starting in 1764, it published an annual list stating the condition of all sea-going merchant ships of 100 gross tonnes or more. Ships remain in the registry until they are sunk or scrapped.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of shipping statistics and intelligence comprising reports, lists, letters, cablegrams and other documents.
Immediate source of acquisition
The fonds was purchased at Sotheby's auction of 24 March 1981, lot 387, by Bertram Rota for McMaster University.
The fonds is contained in two bound volumes, each one stamped on the spine Lloyd's War Record. The volumes contain a table of contents and an index, both at the front of volume 1.
