Mansbridge, Albert (1876-1952)

Biographical history

Albert Mansbridge was born in Gloucester on 10 January 1876 and educated at the Battersea Grammar School. He founded the Workers' Educational Association in 1903 and remained First Secretary until 1915, extending its operations to Australia.

Until his death at Torquay on 22 August 1952, Mansbridge was associated with numerous socialist, co-operative, and church organizations, although education always remained his main interest. In his later years he was President of the World Association for Adult Education. His publications include An Adventure in Working Class Education (1920) and his autobiography, The Trodden Road (1940).

Scope and content

The collection consists mainly of Mansbridge's letters to Leonard Clark. There are also a few manuscripts concerning Mansbridge, Christmas cards, invitations, and announcements relating to Mansbridge, photographs of Mansbridge, and some pamphlets by Mansbridge. This collection was assembled by his friend Leonard Clark. Clark, an educator, author, editor and poet was born on 1 August 1905 in St. Peter Port, Guernsey. He was made inspector of schools with the Ministry of Education in 1936. He died in London in 1981.

Collection was purchased from Bertram Rota on 31 March 1971. A second accrual of a few additional letters was donated by Bertram Rota on 17 November 1983.
