Albert Mansbridge collection

The collection consists mainly of Mansbridge's letters to Leonard Clark. There are also a few manuscripts concerning Mansbridge, Christmas cards, invitations, and announcements relating to Mansbridge, photographs of Mansbridge, and some pamphlets by Mansbridge. This collection was assembled by his friend Leonard Clark. Clark, an educator, author, editor and poet was born on 1 August 1905 in St. Peter Port, Guernsey. He was made inspector of schools with the Ministry of Education in 1936. He died in London in 1981.

Fonds consists of minute books (general membership, executive board, and grievance committees), agreements, proposals for negotiations, reports, and correspondence. The fonds also contains materials relating to traffic signal repairmen, Parking Authority, Dundurn Castle, Flamborough, Dundas, Heritage Village, and other locals (1797, 2177, and 3042).

The fonds (15-1988) is arranged into the following series: minute books, financial, labour negotiations, and publications. Financial includes budget ledgers, cash book pages, estimates and reports, expenses and receipts, annual reports, income taxes, and union dues. Labour relations includes negotiations, agreements, regulations and guidelines, employee benefits, correspondence, and grievances. Publications include convention reports and photographs.

The collection consists of various items relating to Labour history.

  • Tie has drawing of a man in chains with the caption: Repeal Taft Hartley Law.
  • Three audio discs were produced for the Canada Department of Labour by the National Film Board of Canada. Their titles are: Technical and Vocational - - -Training in Canada, Unemployment Insurance in Canada, Labour Management in a Changing World. They are for use with filmstrips which are not extant. One audio disc was issued by the Canada Department of Labour. Its title is: Better Together, Main dans La Main.

Canadian railway labour negotiation collection

The collection consists of materials concerning rules, disputes and labour negotiations with unions of the the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Canadian National Railway and the Grand Trunk Railway system. Some of the unions involved include: Locomotive Engineers, Locomotive Firemen, Conductors, Baggagemen and Brakemen, Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Yardmasters, Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen. There is one photograph (Accession 08-1999).

Collection consists of photographs of and by Millard. Some of his photographs are of labour marches and strikes. The information in his biographical sketch comes from a recorded interview that William Ready did with him in August 1975. An incomplete transcript of the interview has been typed. The letter from Millard to Harry Waisglass of the Faculty of Business at McMaster contains information about the 1946 Stelco strike in Hamilton, Ontario. It was written on 11 March 1975.

Chromium Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd. collection

The collection mainly concerns the formation of an Employees’ Collective Bargaining Committee for the workers in Sault Ste. Marie in December 1941 and the negotiations which followed, culminating in a contract in July1943. The collection contains correspondence, labour legislation documents, draft agreements and other materials, and the completed contract. Correspondents include: Leo H. Timmins; Norman W. Bryne, Secretary; R.O. Denman, Vice-President, Managing Director and Treasurer; officials at the Department of Labour; and others. The collection also contains a Progress Report issued in 1934; a Balance Sheet and Notice of Annual Meeting in 1938; and two undated typescripts written during Word War II. One typescript concerns the development of the company in Sault Ste. Marie. The other is not specifically company related and concerns the struggle of tyranny against democracy.

Fonds consists of correspondence, personal material from university, legal documents, personal and professional photographs, letters of support, ephemera and clippings from David’s political campaign, and condolence letters sent to David’s family following his death.

The fonds consists of reports, correspondence, photographs, publications, sound recordings and other materials amassed by Ed Seymour throughout his career as a union activist, labour leader and educator with such organizations as the International Association of Machinists, the Textile Workers Union of America, the Communication Workers of Canada, and Solidarity Consulting.. Some of the materials, mostly photographs, are copies from various institutions in Canada and the United States. The fonds documents certification drives and strikes (such as Bell Canada, Eaton’s, Gainers and CIBC) throughout the 1970s and 1980s.There are documents relating to the unions Seymour worked for as well as the United Farm Workers of America.There is also material relating to the founding of the New Democratic Party as well as photographs unrelated to labour, mainly aboriginals (First Nations).

General Motors Corporation of Canada and International Union United Automobile Aircraft and Agricultural Implement Workers of America collection

The collection consists of master, local and supplemental agreements between the two organizations. Included is the first collective bargaining agreement recognizing an association of employees (United Automobile Workers, Local 222) at General Motors in April 1937 as well as agreements between various locals and McKinnon Industries and Frigidaire Products. There is also a copy of R.B. Reddoch, "A History of U.A.W. Activities at G.M. of Canada". The photographs are mainly of General Motors executives playing golf.

Hamilton and District Labour Council fonds

The fonds consists mainly of the records of the Hamilton and District Labour Council from its formation in 1956 until 1994. There are also some records from the two bodies which preceded it as well as from the Canadian Congress of Labour Area Council. There have been two accruals.

Harry J. Waisglass fonds

The fonds consists of five accruals. The first accrual measures 1.35 m, and consists of photographs, minutes, reports, memoranda, notes, and correspondence relating to Waisglass's various positions. The second accrual (20-1990) measures .45 m, and consists of addresses, articles, and notes by Waisglass in original and printed form, files of correspondence and notes on some of the positions held by Waisglass. The third accrual (30-1996) measures 1.75 m, and consists of arbitration files, a research manual co-edited by Waisglass, and video and audio cassettes of interviews conducted by Waisglass with several labour leaders. The fourth accrual (33-1997) measures 33 cm, and consists primarily of arbitration and grievance files. The fifth accrual (15-2001) consists of correspondence, letters to the editor, lecture notes, articles, thesis, and biographical information.
