Biographical history

John Edward Macfarlane, editor and publisher, was born in Montreal on 28 March 1942. He was educated at the University of Alberta. As an undergraduate he began to work for Canadian University Press and has stayed close to the world of Canadian newspapers and magazines ever since. At the age of 23 he became an editorial writer for the Globe and Mail, and he was subsequently appointed Entertainment Editor for the Toronto Star, Associate and later Executive Editor of Maclean's, Editor of Toronto Life, Weekend Magazine, Saturday Night and Financial Times. Macfarlane has also been the President of a public relations agency, and the Managing Director of C.T.V News Service. He is currently one of the principals in the publishing house of Macfarlane, Walter and Ross.
