Donald F. Galloway fonds

The fonds consists of photographs, military documents, and letters he wrote to his parents and his fiancée, Catharine Carroll. There is also a letter written by Jack Barker to Don’s parents. There are two oversized framed photographs. One is of the “Canadian Armaured <sic> Corps Recruits Draft Toronto Exhibition July 30th 1941.” The second is of “2nd Platoon ‘A’ Coy. OR(T) R’s #20 C.A.B.T.C. Brantford Ont. Winners of Battalion Competition 23-9-41. Lieut. Barker.” His medals do not form part of this fonds; they are held by his grandson, Donald Turner.

His daughter, Sheila Turcon, has written and self-published Donald Galloway: World War II and Beyond, in 2022.

James “Jim” Lord fonds

The fonds consists primarily of letters that Lord wrote to his wife, Elsie Grace Manewell, during the Second World War. He wrote dedicatedly nearly every day while he was overseas. Very often these letters were a month in transit before arriving in Hamilton. The archive also includes notes on Jim’s military leaves, especially to visit family in Ireland, and his trips to local Lodge meetings, weddings, and movies.

The majority, 743 letters from Jim, are handwritten, as well as some airgraphs, telegrams, and typed letters. Nearly all of these include their envelope, which Elise or her mother have noted the date they arrived compared to when they were sent. An additional 23 letters from others are mostly telegrams or handwritten letters or cards.

The Jo Vellacott fonds contains extensive documentation regarding Vellacott’s work as a historian of women, feminism, pacifism, and Bertrand Russell, both as an academic at several Canadian universities, as well as her work as an independent scholar. The fonds contains a significant amount of correspondence, both personal and professional, which spans almost the entirety of Vellacott’s life. Fonds also contains materials relating to Vellacott’s education, particularly her PhD work at McMaster University, and much of her personal and scholarly writings. It also contains materials relating to Vellacott’s Quakerism and involvement with the Thousand Island Monthly Meetings, as well as photographs of Vellacott and paintings and sketches she made.

Fonds consists of cassette tapes containing recordings of interviews conducted by Neil Armstrong of prominent Black and Caribbean artists, authors, poets, publishers, academics, and politicians for the York University student radio, CHRY 105.5FM. Interviews cover topics such as Black and Caribbean history, literature, community events, international work, and more. Interviewees include The Honourable Lincoln Alexander, Dionne Brand, Afua Cooper, The Honourable Rosemary Brown, Austin Clarke, George Elliott Clark, Louise Bennett (Miss Lou), and others. Some tapes have interviews or speeches made by these individuals outside of a CHRY interview.

Tapes were numbered in accordance with the original order upon arrival. Note: The “A” or “B” following the tape number reflects which side of the tape the recording may be found. Tapes without an affixed letter contain only one recording.

Mutart Family fonds

This is the first accrual of the Mutart Family fonds, which focuses exclusively on the wartime service of Reginald Francis Mutart (7 June 1897 – 2 August 1929) during the First World War, and of his son Robert Jack Mutart (7 May 1923 – 3 February 1962) during the Second World War. The fonds consists of photocopies of 19 letters sent home by Reginald, as well as several original photographs, postcards, and service-related material. For Robert, the fonds contains 188 wartime letters from Robert to Anne, both before and after their marriage in 1945, as well as 89 letters from Robert to his family, and photographs of Robert during his service and of his wedding. There is also a small number of letters sent to Robert’s family from Vincent M. Curran, a close military friend, on behalf of Robert while he was ill.
