Manuscript textbook on rhetoric and grammar, with text in Latin and examples in Latin and French. French examples include excerpts from the works of Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux, Jean Racine, and Antoinette de Lafon de Boisguérin des Houlières. Likely produced by a Francophone individual in the province of Lower Canada between the end of the eighteenth century and the War of 1812.

Hymn to be sung by the charity children

The text of the hymn begins "Did Jesus weep for human woes". The date "c1780's" has been written in pencil by an unknown hand. Research Collections has two broadsides containing hymns. One is titled "The First Hymn Sung by the Charity Children" and is dated 7 July 1713. The other one is "The Second Hymn Sung by the Charity Children" and is dated 20 Sept. 1914. The text of the broadsides does not match this manuscript.

Qing Dynasty scroll

The handscroll is an Imperial mandate from the Tongzhi Emperor ( 1856-1875) to the parents of Lu Chuan-Lin (1836-1910), an officer of the court and a Jinshi who passed the highest Imperial examinations. The text which is in Mandarin and Manchu, is written in ink and gold paint upon contiguous panels of blue, fuchsia, gold, cream and purple silk, backed onto sections of laid paper. The edict proclaims a promotion given to a Manchu official. The emperor praises the distinguished service of Lu Chuan-Lin. The scroll is wound around two cedar dowels at both ends, and is tied with multicoloured flat silk ribbon. The scroll is housed in an acid-free box.

Manuscript is a fair copy of letters and accounts which were published as Letters, Remarks, &c. with a view to open an extensive trade in the article of tin, from the County of Cornwall to India, Persia, and China, compiled by George Unwin (London: W. and J. Stratford, 1790). The manuscript was owned with a print copy of the book (catalogued as <a href="http://catalogue.mcmaster.ca/catalogue/Record/807616">B18058</a> and part of the library of the future King George IV).

The additional letter explains that the ms copy was found with"some old papers" at the Board of Trade offices. The letter from a Mr. Williams was sent to William George Anderson, the Auditor of the Duchy of Cornwall (1851-1891).

Report, prepared by a Lieutenant Colonel of the Royal Army Service Corps stationed in Baghdad, describing the performance and maintenance record of military vehicles in Mesopotamia and Persia. It is dated 20 March 1919 and was sent to A.D.T, M.T, at General Headquarters. It contains a complete and detailed report on the work of this depot from 2 March 1918 to 31 January 1919.Carbon typescript, unsigned, 80 pages, plus tabulated lists, drawings, etc., pp. 81-108, followed by drawings, numbered 1-24, of automotive parts and shops.

H.C. Hass photograph album

The album contains photographs belonging to Flight Officer H.C. Hass, RCAF, at Air Observer School #8, Ancienne Lorette, Quebec in 1942-1943. Typically at an AOS, trainees took a 12-week course on aerial photography, reconnaissance, and air navigation, which included 60 to 70 hours of practical experience in the air. The album illustrates Norwegian trainees, New Zealand and Czech liaison officers, wings ceremonies, mess scenes, the hockey team, buildings, planes, as well as scenes in Quebec City. In addition there are photographs of the Quebec Conference in August 1943, including Winston Churchill, Mackenzie King and others; also two photographs of Princess Juliana of the Netherlands making presentations. The album measures 28 x 40 cm and contains 18 leaves with approximately 126 photographs. Most photographs are 8 x 11 cm but some are as large as 25 x 21 cm.

E.S. Copeland letter

The letter he wrote is dated June 1915 somewhere in France and is addressed to Mrs. Newell. The letter concerns the death of her son, Lawrence Gunn Newell, on 23 April 1915 from wounds sustained during the advance on Ypres. The letter also concerns another son, Claude, and other soldiers from the Watford area. The Newell brothers were the sons of Thomas and Sarah Newell. Gunn Newell was the first Lambton County solider to die in the Great War. Copeland asks her to have the essence of his letter printed in the Watford newspaper.

This log book covers Douglas Cameron's period of active service over the European continent (Berlin, Cherbourg, Guernsey, Nuremberg, Genoa, Turin and elsewhere) -- a total of 325 flying hours in daylight and 271 hours at night. Two sorties recorded in the log resulted in the awarding of Victoria Crosses, to Rawdon H. Middleton and Sergeant Bazalgette.
