Hamilton (Ont.) history collection

The Hamilton history collection consists of essays written about Hamilton by McMaster students for Professor John Weaver of the McMaster University History Department and numbered file folders containing news clippings about Hamilton.

Additionally, it lists some material available in the Marjorie Freeman Campbell and Mabel Burkholder collections, which are related to the material here.

The fonds consists mainly of the records of the Hamilton and District Labour Council from its formation in 1956 until 1994. There are also some records from the two bodies which preceded it as well as from the Canadian Congress of Labour Area Council. There have been two accruals.

Hamilton, Ontario was incorporated in 1847. Edward Jackson purchased property in the future city beginning in 1839. In May 1854 Jackson sold his property to Donald McInnes who later mortgaged the property. By 1859 he had sold the property to the firm of George Peabody and Co.

This collection consists of an abstract probably prepared in 1860 giving detailed information on the purchase, sale, and mortgaging of properties between King and Mountain (now John) Streets between 1839 and 1859; four indentures concerning Donald McInnes and his property; a broadside for part of a plan of the Beulah neighbourhood.

There have been nineaccruals. The first accrual measures 46 cm. The second accrual (62-1995) measures 33 cm. The third accrual (13-1996) measures 30 cm. The fourth accrual (5-1997) consists of 2 files. The fifth accrual (29-1997) consists of 10 files. The sixth accrual (02-1998) consists of 3 files. The seventh accrual (09-1999) measures 38 cm. The eighth accrual (25-2002) measures 12 cm. The ninth accrual (18-2006) measures 12 cm.

The documents in this collection were gathered by Robert Kristofferson for a biography about Mr. Jaggard, The Bob Jaggard Story. They concern Jaggard's involvement with his union and the labour movement, politics, and local causes and consist of correspondence, news clippings, an incomplete court transcripts. Most of the documents are photocopies.

There have been three accruals. The first accrual, which consisted of photographic slides and camera equipment, was deacessioned in July 2008. The second accrual (28-1996, 32-1996) measures 1 m, and is arranged into the following series: personal correspondence; legal correspondence and documents; Canadian Red Cross society; Samuel B. Freeman scrapbooks; memorabilia; certificates and awards; photographs and albums. It includes legal correspondence relating to the family property on 341 James St. South. The third accrual (29-1998) measures 3 cm and consists of correspondence, news clippings and a photograph.

The fonds consists of reports, correspondence, photographs, publications, sound recordings and other materials amassed by Ed Seymour throughout his career as a union activist, labour leader and educator with such organizations as the International Association of Machinists, the Textile Workers Union of America, the Communication Workers of Canada, and Solidarity Consulting.. Some of the materials, mostly photographs, are copies from various institutions in Canada and the United States. The fonds documents certification drives and strikes (such as Bell Canada, Eaton’s, Gainers and CIBC) throughout the 1970s and 1980s.There are documents relating to the unions Seymour worked for as well as the United Farm Workers of America.There is also material relating to the founding of the New Democratic Party as well as photographs unrelated to labour, mainly aboriginals (First Nations).

William A. Stephens fonds

Fonds consists primarily of 6 volumes of diaries, written by Stephens from 1852 to 1881 (with gaps). The diaries provide significant insight into Stephens’ life, and record events in Owen Sound and throughout Ontario; none of the diaries cover the period when Stephens was writing the poem, Hamilton, though he does refer to the work from time to time. The diaries do include several other poems composed by Stephens. The fonds also includes a charcoal drawing of Stephens, a copy of Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress that was read to Stephens as a child, biographical information, documents relating to various family members, and other material.
