Fonds is bound in covers with "Rev. J. Brand Private Papers Mss." stamped on spine.

Katharine Birkmyre fonds

The fonds is contained in a green leather album trimmed in gold. It consists of correspondence mostly addressed to Katharine Birkmyre, although a few letters are addressed to her father, Canon Skelton and to her husband. It also includes invitations, dinner menus and autographs, two photographs of the Red Cross Hospital in Gibraltar, and her admission badge to the Royal enclosure at the Ascot races in 1937. There is one letter from Archibald Philip Primrose, Earl of Rosebery and another from Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, both prime ministers, to Henry Birkmyre. Both letters concern Birkmyre's defeats in elections held in 1895 and 1899. There is also one letter from Edmund Gosse, poet and man of letters, addressed to Lady Charnwood. The album has been annotated by Katharine Birkmyre.

Katherine Clarke fonds

Katherine Clarke has dubbed her archives “The Peace House Papers”. Digital copies of the originals and documents from 2009-10 have been placed by her into three folders: book one, “Finding Causes”, consisting of biographical information and letters to her parents between September 1963 and June 1964; book two, “Touring Cuba with 45 Canadians in the summer of 1964 … In the 5th year of La Revolución Cubana”, consisting of photographs of her time in Cuba (including photos of Fidel Castro speaking to a large crowd and playing baseball), photographs of “Harry” and other soldiers (a soldier in Castro’s army, pre-1959, i.e. before the revolution photographs), and her account (entitled “Sugar Daddy”); book three, letters to her parents between September 1964 and March 1965. Originals of most of these materials are also extant in the Clarke fonds.

Kilmaster family fonds

The fonds consists mainly of invitations to social events, including assemblies, receptions, commencements, banquets and balls. There is a news clipping of a review of the play “Old Soldiers” put on by the Brantford Amateurs in the Stratford Opera House in 1885 in which both Kilmasters acted. Pauline Johnson also acted in this play. There are also programmes, the funeral notice (noted above), a trespass notice, dancing instructions, three letters, a few documents related to the Dufferin Rifles, Jolite Club meeting notices, several news clippings, and miscellaneous printed materials. Most of the activities took place in Brantford and surrounding towns. However, some invitations are from places in Michigan.

Air Raid Precautionary (ARP), City of Westminster

The fonds consists of correspondence, memos, drawings, maps, and photographs, arranged into six series.

Series 1: Survey of Basements, 1938-1939, 1.6 m of textual records and graphic material. Arrangement is alphabetical by street address.
This series includes the names of tenants and owners, the status of the building (occupied or vacant), the date of construction where known, additions or deletions of street numbers over time, either through deletions or renumbering, sketches or engineering drawings of potentially suitable basements (for either private or public shelters), and a personal opinion from the surveyor as to the condition of the property, and its suitability for ARP purposes. It contains hand-completed survey forms, arranged first by City ward, and then by streets within the ward, describing basements of most buildings in the City, both residential and commercial (late 1938 to early 1939). The series also contains a published portfolio of the Planning Department’s proposed use for properties compared to their 1937 usage. There is also a detailed street map showing the ward boundaries.

Series 2: Air Raid Shelters, Works Department, 1938-1953; predominant 1938-1946, 6 m of textual records and graphic material. Arranged alphabetically by individual addresses.
This series deals with maintenance of air raid shelters for more than 50 persons. It describes individual addresses with chronologically arranged sequences of information including completed owner/tenant forms from 1938-1939 indicating the number of persons in the establishment, the nature of a potential shelter, and other details, with relevant correspondence. There is information on: addresses where strengthening, maintenance, problems, and finally decommissioning took place; completed forms, relevant correspondence, and submission dates for businesses who applied for Home Security Grants which were funded by the National government, not by the City; and matters concerning a variety of air raid shelter issues at addresses where the basements were considered for air raid shelters, but were either never developed, or did not meet City/County criteria, e.g. church buildings.

Series 3: City Engineer’s office files, 1928-1963; predominant 1937-1946, 4.1 m of textual records and graphic material.
This series covers a broad range of topics relevant to the City Engineer’s Office and covered under the ARP designation, which, despite its title, was far broader than “Air Raid Precautionary” systems. The City Engineers dealt with, for example: road safety during blackouts ( white paint, lighting of crosswalks, traffic patterns, and a design for “cat’s eyes”); sandbagging; casualty stations and their operation; debris removal and street repairs; personnel matters regarding draft deferments; recycling of salvaged materials; fuel supplies and storage; construction and equipping of field kitchens; waste food treatment plants; the activities of ARP wardens and their posts; collection and collation of all individual air raid incidents; and even practical issues in setting up and dismantling reviewing stands for numerous parades. The series also includes some advertising material and samples of materials used in blackout curtains, sisal rope, and sandbag preservation.

Series 4: Correspondence, 1939-1940, 32 cm of textual records.
This series contains letters, predominantly 1939-1940, to the City Engineer’s Office, in three areas: supply and retrieval of armlets for ARP wardens; complaints and concerns of local business owners with regard to their air raid shelters; claims for reimbursement in the operation of the shelters.

Series 5: Drawings (engineering or architectural) accompanying home security applications, 1933-1941, 32 cm of graphic material. Arrangement is alphabetical by street address.
Drawings of proposed shelters in commercial buildings, some of whose owners applied through the City Engineer’s Office to the National Government for Home Security Grants for the development of air raid shelters therein. Many relate to addresses in Series 2, where the applicants for Home Security Grants (CBS2 applications) were successful. The City retained at least one copy of the required drawings, and applied its own identification numbers to them, beginning with “W”. Some drawings do not match any of the addresses in Series 2; their status is unclear.

Series 6: Advertising leaflets, road closures, accounts ledger, 1940-1945, 32 cm of textual records.
This series contains a group of manufactures’ advertising leaflets of products relevant to the City Engineer’s ARP activities. There is also a single accounting ledger detailing the costs incurred in supporting the public air raid shelters for more than a year. Finally, the series contains a single set of forms detailing road closures in Westminster for part of the period.

The fonds consists of the following material: Juliette Celine Anholt, identity card, proof of citizenship, ration cards and printed coupons; also a fake identity card in the name of Helene Engelina Heukers – all with photographs except for the ration cards. Emma (her daughter), a ration card in the name of Emma van Dijk, two school notebooks ca. 1940-42, a book entitled Joosje uit de Heidehut with an inscription from her father on the occasion of her tenth birthday in 1941, a drawing of a child's face 1947, Duik-Kaart 24 April 1945 about her hidden status, an identification card with Nazi stamps 1940s, a psychiatric report dated 8 January 1947, cloth-covered folk dolls of an Orthodox Jewish couple of Polish origin (given to Emma by her father in 1941); for Keetje Kalf, 4 postcards to her parents 1937. There are six original loose photographs of Juliette, Emma, and other family members, an original photograph of her school class in 1938-39 and a photo reproduction of Emma, her brother and sister (March 1943). There is one reproduction of a photograph of Emma’s fifth grade class. Also in the fonds are some documents of Erich Weisz whom Emma met after the war and married. Two identity cards were issued to him in English by the Allied Expeditionary Force in 1945. The third is a letter in Dutch from the Central Registration Office for Jews, 20 December 1945, addressed to Erich Weisz [spelt Weiss on the document].

Emmy Weisz has written some brief recollections of that time which are available with the fonds.

The fonds consists of four letters. Three of the four letters are addressed to James and Elizabeth Firth who lived in Sutton Derwent near York, England. The first letter is dated 15 April 1850 and informs the Firths (his brother and sister) that he and his family are sailing to New York from Liverpool the next day. The second letter, 20 May, informs the Firths of their safe arrival in New York the previous day. The third letter relates the information that the family has settled on a farm of 80 acres in Delevan, Walworth county, Wisconsin. The fourth letter is written by Elizabeth. She notes that her brother died two or three years after settling in Wisconsin. She is attempting to find if any of the family are still living.

The fonds consists of three handwritten manuscripts. Pierrot sauvé was published under the title La Rédemption de Pierrot in 1903. Le Songe d'une nuit d'hiver was also published in 1903. Pierrot à Stamboul was published by James B. Sanders in the Revue d'histoire du théâtre 1980 (# 3) : 232-247. The manuscripts are 25, 21 and 13 pages respectively. They are undated, but were probably written sometime in the 1880s. The pantomimes are written in French.

The fonds consists of b&w photographs removed from an album. They are both family and business photographs. The business photographs include one with a group of men standing in front of a make-shift building with the sign “Robert Miller & Sons, General Contractors”. Many photographs show the construction of what appears to be a lock wall with gates. The family photographs include the following: formal family portraits, one of which is captioned “Young Fred”; vacation photographs at the family cottage north of Toronto – one is dated 1904 – with boats; vacation photographs of a trip out West possibly in the mid to late 1910s, including the Yale Hotel and Stanley Park; photographs of various family members in automobiles with one captioned “Packard?”,possibly mid to late 1910s; lakeships, group on a boat, children playing and other photographs. In addition, the fonds contains the marriage certificate of Fred R. Miller and Edna A. Noxon.

Fonds consists of a recruitment letter dated 15 May 1915 looking for agents to sell and promote Bradley-Garretson publications. Along with the letter are the postmarked envelope and a return envelope, and three advertising supplements that accompanied the letter. One flyer promotes a publication detailing the sinking of the Lusitania. A second promotes a book entitled The World's Greatest War. The final large poster promotes the book Billy Sunday: The Man and His Message. These supplements were tools used by the agents to promote sales of these publications.

The McGill University Press material includes the initial proposal document, newspaper clippings, early design prototypes, and graphic materials produced by the press (page proofs, invitations, greeting cards, prints of R.D. Wilson artwork). The Ryerson Press material includes two logo blocks (publisher’s device), newspaper clippings, and various administrative files. Also included in the fonds: correspondence with Marsh Jeanneret, Donald Sutherland, Dick Wilson and W.H. Clarke from Clarke, Irwin & Co. Ltd.; photographs; an unpublished manuscript entitled The Crooked Axe: A Lighthearted Sketch of Canadian History to 1900 written by Farr in 2008 (unpublished at time of this description), and a copy of The Living Past of Montreal, McGill University Press, 1964, drawn by R.D. Wilson, described by Eric McLean.
