Robin Farr fonds

The fonds consists of material created during Farr’s career. The McGill University Press material includes the initial proposal document, newspaper clippings, early design prototypes, and graphic materials produced by the press (page proofs, invitations, greeting cards, prints of R.D. Wilson artwork). The Ryerson Press material includes two logo blocks (publisher’s device), newspaper clippings, and various administrative files. Also included in the fonds: correspondence with Marsh Jeanneret, Donald Sutherland, Dick Wilson and W.H. Clarke from Clarke, Irwin & Co. Ltd.; photographs; an unpublished manuscript entitled The Crooked Axe: A Lighthearted Sketch of Canadian History to 1900 written by Farr in 2008 (unpublished at time of this description), and a copy of The Living Past of Montreal, McGill University Press, 1964, drawn by R.D. Wilson, described by Eric McLean.

Cigar label collection

This collection consists primarily of illustrative labels from cigar boxes manufactured by cigar companies in the United States in the last decade of the nineteenth century when cigar companies became aware of the importance of advertising their products to a large number of discriminating cigar smokers. The major companies were: Geo. S. Harris & Sons, Lith. Phila.; L.E. Neumann & Co.; Schumacher & Ettinger N.Y.; and Schmidt & Co. With regard to Canadian cigar companies, Adam Beck. London Ont. is represented, and there is also a box lid from Joseph Winterhalt of Berlin (now Kitchener), Ont. The labels were lithographed with original designs and often patriotic motifs: young women, historical figures, heroes of battles, native people, sports and leisure, Cuba and the Caribbean, and events of the day. The fonds consists of recordings of prominent speakers and theorists in the field of Peace and Conflict Studies. Many, but not all, of the recordings were done at McMaster University. The topics covered are wide-ranging, and there is enormous diversity within each series. A small selection of some of the more well-represented topics includes post-secondary education in El Salvador, the arms trade, violence in Sri Lanka, the Middle East, Central America, women and violence, nuclear disarmament, trade unionism in South Africa, and human rights in Guatemala. Some of the speakers are Noam Chomsky, Chief Ovide Mercredi, Ursula Franklin, Mubarak Awad, Helen Caldicott, Ramsey Clark, Joseph Rotblat, Gwynne Dyer and Gene Sharp.

Additionally, there is material from a scrapbook put together by Ivison of highlight from the war. Many of the occasions are mentioned in the oral history found in Box 2, File 25.

It includes correspondence, an appointment book, and family history research materials The second accrual (12-1998) measures 32 cm, and has been arranged into the following series: speeches, correspondence; political files; news clippings. The third accrual (29-1998) measures 1.7 m, and has been arranged into the following series and sub-series: correspondence (congratulatory, family, general, gubernatorial, literary, political, and research); manuscripts and typescripts (autobiographical, books, broadcast scripts, lay sermons, newspaper columns, novels, poetry, screen plays, speeches, stories, uncategorized); printed materials (military reports, news clippings including reviews of his works, programs, stamp covers); photographs; sound recordings. The fourth accrual (39-1999 and 41-2000) measures 20 cm, and has been arranged into the following series: correspondence, manuscripts and typescripts, and printed materials and photographs. The fifth accrual (11-2001) measures 12.5 cm and consists of audio cassettes, a speech typescript and a colour photograph. This sixth accrual (12-2002) measures 6cm and has been arranged in two series: correspondence; typescripts, programs, photographs and printed materials. The seventh accrual (15-2002) measures 5.5 cm and consists of two guest books and photographs of certificates. The eighth accrual (30-2002) measures 10 cm and consists of printed material and two photograph albums. The ninth accrual (14-2003) consists of three issues of Leather Lines: The Journal of the Leather Familty History Society. The tenth accrual (5-2005) measures 12.5 cm and consists of correspondence, honorary awards, and his death certificate and funeral services.

Series 1 is particularly significant, containing 12,000 case files documenting the creation of approximately 50,000 thirty-second radio and television commercials produced by Pirate Group Inc. (Toronto office) and its predecessor companies: O’Reilly Radio Inc., Robert Armes Inc., Shurman Armes Crawford, and The Air Company, from 1981 to 2005. These files document the entire production process from the initial phase through to the finished product, though some files are more complete than others. The material found in the file may include: concept presentations; casting sessions and auditions; ACTRA contracts and other actor contracts; script progression and revision; briefing documents; final recording-day scripts with directors notes; recording session schedules; music demos, final tracks, sheet music and lyrics; production edits; final audio mixes, element breakdown of the recording (voices, sound effects, music); final radio and TV commercials; budget estimates, quotations and final billing; etc.
