George Stephen Vickers fonds

The fonds consists primarily of Stephen’s correspondence with Elizabeth. There are a few letters from her to him and additional letters with other correspondents. There is also some of his and Elizabeth's academic research and writing, as well as documents from their lives. There is a useful biography of key people written by Daniel Vickers that will provide context for the documents. The fonds is arranged in three series: correspondence; writings; and other documents.

Titles of series (with the exception of 22 and 23) are derived from chapter headings used by Thomson for a proposed autobiography for which the materials were gathered. Series 22 has been created by the archivist to contain all the correspondence to and from David Smith. Series 23 has been created to house audio-visual material in one place. The fonds consists primarily of Fred’s correspondence to Margaret and his parents. Additionally, there are a number of photographs taken while he served, and documents from his life. As well, there are a number of highly detailed maps first from his training and then from the war. The fonds consists of four series: correspondence; photographs, military service and miscellaneous; and maps.

There have been four accruals. The first accrual (03-2000), measures 6.52 m and consists of 16 series: Poetry; Short Stories; Non-fiction; Fiction; Plays; Poetry to McNamara from Joyce Carol Oates; Contracts; Personal; Sesame Press; Reading and Creative Writing Courses Taught; Conferences; University of Windsor Courses Taught; Reviews of McNamara's work; Correspondence; Dissertation; Publications - sub-series: poetry. short stories, non-fiction, Sesame Press, University of Windsor Review. The second accrual (39-2002), measures 1.60 m and consists of the following series: Journals and Notebooks; Poetry; Short Stories and fiction; Non-fiction; Correspondence; Personal. This accrual is supplemented with a collection of books and periodicals. The third accrual (35-2006) consists of three series: Manuscripts; Personal Materials; Journals and Notebooks. The fourth accrual (28-1010), measures 38 cm and consists of journals, poetry, short stories, and a novel. The fifth accrual (2013-003) consists of the following series: Notebooks, Poetry, Fiction; Seminars, Teaching, Readings and Awards; Correspondence and Personal, Business and Other. The fifth accrual was accompanied by periodicals and monographs containing McNamara’s work. These have been separated from the archival collection and a list accompanies this finding aid.

The first accrual consists of 237 letters written by Professor Mendelson to his family, three journals, and travel documents. The accrual documents two periods in Professor Mendelson’s life (1961-63 and 1971-72) when he lived as a student in Israel with his wife Sara. This material is available in Box 1.
The second accrual consists of the unpublished memoir A Life in Briefs. Dr. Mendelson has also provided supplementary material to many of the chapters including correspondence, publications, photos, objects, and ephemera.
The third and fourth accruals consist of artwork by Robin Wall.

The majority of the material for this collection, especially the early material, comes from two scrapbooks maintained by Valerie Tryon’s father, Kenneth. These consisted of newspaper clippings, photographs, concert programs, and other ephemera. In rehousing this material it was not always possible to safely detach them from their original housing. As a result, the items do not always appear strictly in chronological order.
