Society of Friends (Pickering, ON) collection

The collection consists of seven statements of expulsion from the Yonge Street Monthly Meetings mostly held at Pickering. One of the statements makes specific reference to Elias Hicks. More than one of the statements makes reference to participation in the Rebellion of 1837 which violated the known Christian Testimony against war. There is also an extract from the Yonge Street Monthly Meeting held on 12 December 1839 and a one-leaf untitled, unsigned manuscript of religious writing.

Series consists of:

(1) 49 reel to reel recordings, 1939-1963, acquired with Archives 1; most have been converted to cassettes; includes: interviews on various radio programs; Russell speeches at mass meetings of the Committee of 100 at Trafalgar square and other gatherings; Russell’s 90 birthday concert; and more.

(2) 28 reel to reel recordings, 1963-1968, acquired with Archives 2; all have been converted to cassettes; most of the recordings deal with the International War Crimes Tribunal, while others include radio interviews and other topics.

(3) ca. 170 recordings (reel to reel, cassette, vinyl, and CDs), 1938-1996, acquired as ‘Recent Acquisitions’, or Archives 3; includes: numerous interviews with and speeches by Russell, but also many interviews with various people about Russell, and other material.

The collection consists of pamphlets, periodicals, newspapers, posters, and other ephemeral material, and correspondence. Selected samples of organizations include: Friends of the Abraham Lincoln League; Medical Bureau to Aid Spanish Democracy; Spanish Information Bureau; American Society for Technical Aid to Spanish Democracy; Spanish Refugee Relief Campaign. There is correspondence from the following: Phil Bard, Edward K. Barsky, Ralph Bates, Fred Biedenkapp, Anita Brenner, Howard Fast, Mrs. Henry Goddard Leach, Dorothy Parker, John Dos Passos, Paul Robeson, Vincent Sheean, John Sherman, Milton Wolff.

The major part of the fonds consists of sales invoices. They indicate who was buying what items of Canadiana and what prices were being paid. Almost invariably correspondence initiating or relating to the sale was attached to the invoices and they have been left there. Many of the buyers are Canadian university or public libraries and academics, particularly those in the field of Canadian history. As well as the invoice series, there is a full set of catalogues, financial statements, credit notes, correspondence relating to book auctions and general correspondence.

There have been four accruals. The collection consists of amateur and professional sports as well as recreational sports from Canada and the United States. It includes photographs, posters, pamphlets and leaflets, programs, calendars, a scrapbook and an engraving, cards and other items.

The black and white photographs were either taken and/or collected by H.C. Hodgens of Peterborough, Ont. He was presumably an employee of Morrow and Beatty Ltd. Most of the photographs are undated, but those that are dated were taken in 1927 and 1928. Some of the photographs have either written or typed captions. They depict the Mattagami River, Smoky Falls dam and power plant, the paper mill, the rail line as well as unidentified men. Most of the photographs have numbers stamped on their versos from 00 to 96. They have been removed from an album.

The second part of the collection consists of news releases, letters to employees, and other communications created during the 1968 labour dispute between Papermakers and Paperworks Union, Local 256, and the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Co. Ltd. and Kimberly-Clark of Canada Ltd. The material belonged to John Grimshaw, who was the mediator for the dispute.

Series consists of Bertrand Russell's correspondence with his Stanley relatives ranging from his early life to later years and offers insight into significant events in Russell's life and the nature of his relationships with certain family members. Russell's family members often include their opinions about his writings and activities in the correspondence. Some replies are written by Lady Edith Russell. Letters from Russell are typescript copies, and several incoming letters are typescript copies although most are handwritten or typed originals.

Correspondents include Lady Alice Avebury, Andrew Cunningham, Lady Agnes Grove, Lady Dorothy Henley, Aurea Howard, Geoffry Howard, Nancy Mitford, Elspeth Fox Pitt, G.L. Fox Pitt, Cecilia Roberts, uncle Lyulph Stanley, aunt Maude Stanley, and Fabia Stanley.

Of note are letters from Russell's uncle, Lyulph Stanley, who supported Russell during WWI; some correspondence with Nancy Mitford relating to her book Voltaire in Love; correspondence with Lady Dorothy Henley relating to her book about her mother titled Rosalind Howard, Countess Carlisle; and correspondence with his cousin Elspeth Fox Pitt during Russell's second time in prison in 1961.

Acquired primarily as part of Archives 1, with some additional items acquired as part of Archives 2.

The fonds consists of letters that the brothers wrote to Adam White of the British Museum from 1837 to 1848. White was an Assistant in the Zoology Department from 1835 to 1863. Most of the letters are written by Robert. There is also a journal kept by an unidentified man (presumably a Stark) who was living in Cape Town, South Africa from 1830 to 1834. The unbound journal consists of diary entries as the author travels by horse and sometimes by wagon in the area around Cape Town in 1830 and 1831. He often goes to Stellenbosch. The journal has some editing marks in it; at one point the author notes that his father has suggested that he write a book. The diary breaks off in 1831. The final few pages deal with the author’s return from Bombay, India to Cape Town on the “Earl of Eldon” in the summer of 1834.

The archives consists of correspondence and other material related to Stuart Ivison’s service during the war. He wrote home to his wife regularly, and often letters to his children, which comprise the bulk of the collection. There are also letters from his wife and other correspondents. Additionally, there is material from a scrapbook put together by Ivison of highlight from the war. Many of the occasions are mentioned in the oral history found in Box 2, File 25.
