Saturday Night fonds

There have been five accruals. The first accrual is organized into four series: correspondence, 1968-1981; editorial files, 1981-1983; Art Department photographs, 1927-[1983?]; Scrapbooks, 1960-1976. Authors in the correspondence series include: Lovat Dickson, Hugh Garner, John Glassco, Norman Levine, George Woodcock, Margaret Atwood, Pierre Berton, Matt Cohen, John Robert Colombo, Marian Engel, Mavis Gallant, Margaret Laurence, Brian Moore, Peter C. Newman, Mordecai Richler, Michael Bliss, Kenneth McNaught, George Bowering, Louis Dudek, George Faludy, Ralph Gustafson, Irving Layton, Dennis Lee, Dorothy Livesay, Susan Musgrave, Michael Ondaatje, Miriam Waddington and Tom Wayman. This accrual reflects, to a very marked degree, the tenure of Robert Fulford.

The second accrual (13-2002) is organized into 6 series : Writers Files kept by editor Paul Wilson; Letters to the editor (Christina Brandao, John Fraser, Lisa Rundle, Robert Weaver and Kenneth Whyte); Production; Awards and photographs; News clippings and Card index. This accrual was received with a book collection and issues of Saturday Night from the 1930s and 1940s with a few earlier issues. The book collection and journals are listed separately and will be catalogued for Research Collections independently of this accrual. The third accrual (02-2003) is organized into 3 series: Editorial correspondence; Writers Files and Awards and Letters to the Editor. When the magazine suspended publication in 2005, all files at St. Joseph Media offices were removed; they did not come to McMaster. The fourth accrual (27-2007) consists of printed materials re the history of Saturday Night compiled by George Fetherling. The fifth accrual was compiled by Frank Moher, former editor at Saturday Night. Accrual includes articles Moher edited during his time at the magazine, as well as his own work.

Jeffery Donaldson Fonds

The fonds consists of textual materials and photographs pertaining to Donaldson’s personal life, creative work, and academic career at McMaster University. Documentary forms include Jeffery Donaldson’s notebooks, journals, research, and manuscripts for his various published and unpublished works.

Series 1 is particularly significant, containing 12,000 case files documenting the creation of approximately 50,000 thirty-second radio and television commercials produced by Pirate Group Inc. (Toronto office) and its predecessor companies: O’Reilly Radio Inc., Robert Armes Inc., Shurman Armes Crawford, and The Air Company, from 1981 to 2005. These files document the entire production process from the initial phase through to the finished product, though some files are more complete than others. The material found in the file may include: concept presentations; casting sessions and auditions; ACTRA contracts and other actor contracts; script progression and revision; briefing documents; final recording-day scripts with directors notes; recording session schedules; music demos, final tracks, sheet music and lyrics; production edits; final audio mixes, element breakdown of the recording (voices, sound effects, music); final radio and TV commercials; budget estimates, quotations and final billing; etc.

The fonds consists of records related to Ellen Seligman’s professional career at McClelland & Stewart (1977-2016) and her PEN Canada presidency (2009-2011). Many records, predominantly photographs and correspondence, relate to Seligman’s personal life.

Jack Winter fonds

There have been eight accruals. Four accruals from the 1970s have been combined and consist of stage plays, radio and television material, Winter’s thesis on T.S. Eliot and other related works, articles and book reviews, poetry, and correspondence. The fifth accrual consists of stage, radio and television plays, poems and short stories, a book about creative writing, and correspondence. Sound recordings, moving images and photographic slides also form part of the fonds. They have been removed from their accruals and are stored separately. The sixth, seventh, and eighth accruals comprise stage, radio, and television plays; poetry and prose manuscripts; correspondence and teaching records.

Paris Peace Conference Photograph Collection

Collection comprises photographs of the Paris Peace Conference, most attributed to Brown Brothers, New York. Approximately one half of the photographs in the collection are duplicates, and some are later prints from the era in which they were originally created. Photographs depict the location of the conference at Versailles and elsewhere (Trianon Palace Hotel, the Hall of Mirrors, Hotel Crillon, the Salle d’Horloge, etc.) and the many world leaders, delegates, diplomats, and others in attendance at the conference. People depicted in the photos include Earl Curzon, Winston Churchill, Bonar Law, Col. Edward M. House, Robert Lansing, H. White, and General Bliss. Typical photos are images of the Big Four (David Lloyd George, Vittorio Orlando, Woodrow Wilson, and Georges Clemenceau), the American delegation, German representatives, and the Allied Supreme Council. In addition, the collection is supplemented by six photographs of David Lloyd George, England’s war time chancellor and Prime Minister (one photo of the old cabinet room at Downing Street). These photographs are attributed to Elliot and Fry, Funk & Wagnalls Company, and Brown Brothers, circa 1913-1940.

Bernadette Ryan (Rule) Fonds

The fonds consists of textual and audio records pertaining to Bernadette Ryan’s literary career, academic teaching at McMaster University and Mohawk College, and work on the podcast series Art Waves (episodes 1-87).

Series groupings predominantly reflect the received order of records; any additional groupings were supplied by the processing archivist following functional analysis of Ryan’s writing, community work, and teaching career.

The fonds consists of Chisholm’s correspondence and legal documents he filed on behalf of the Six Nations. His correspondents included: two lawyers who acted as his agents in Ottawa; many Six Nations councillors; Government ministers; and archivists. The legal documents he filed include Statements, Memorandums and Petitions of Right. There are also copies of many documents that he researched in order to establish the historical record. These copies date back to 1763.
