This collection consists of various pieces of ephemera and other items related to the Second World War.

The collection consists of the History of United States Army Base Hospital No. 20 (Philadelphia, 1920): 257 pages with many illustrations; as well as 16 photographs, 1918. The material appears to come from May Grenville of Thorold, Ontario, who served as a nurse with the hospital. There are initial photographs of her at Ellis Island, where the nurses were stationed before setting out for France. It then includes photos of the staff, as well as some of the various personnel Grenville served with in Mobile Surgery units, plus a postcard of the chapel at Chatel-Guyon, where the hospital was. In addition to photos related to the hospital, there are two photos of Canadian soldiers, as well as two photographs of grave markers at Vimy Ridge taken on 22 December 1918. The names on the grave markers are F. Thornton and Charles Grenville, her brother. Finally, there is a small, unidentified photograph of a number of women seated on one side of a sunny room. A number of the photos appear in the book.

This is a collection of fourteen letters, some addressed to the editor of Nash’s magazine, mostly written in August and September 1914, the beginning of World War I. One of the letters begins: “you have asked me for a message of encouragement to your readers in the dark hour of our country’s fortune.” The collection ranges from lengthy letters to a few lines. Literary contributors include Barry Pain, Louis Parker, Mrs. W. Desmond Humphreys, E. Temple Thurston. There are also letters from military figures (Major General Sir Henry Page Croft, Major General Sir Alfred Edward Turner, General Sir George Benjamin Wolseley). Other contributions are from Sir T. Vansittart Bowater, the Lord Mayor of London , the Archbishop of Armagh and the Bishop of Chicester.

The collection consists of the letter to Mrs. Bromley and well as two photgraphs of presumably Canadian troops. One is a postcard photograph. The other is identified as "C sub-section, A.S.C. Section, G.H.Q., 3rd Echelon" and was taken in Rouen, France in September 1916. On the verso of the photograph are signatures of the soldiers -- some of them have very small pasted photographs beside their signatures.

The temperance collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, pamphlets, leaflets, posters, news clippings, government documents from various countries, lantern slides and realia. There have been four accruals; the first two accruals have been combined. Serials and monographs belonging to these accruals have been separately catalogued.

This collection consists of the following audio recordings of Dianne Woodman’s interviews with leading figures in Canadian publishing.

The black and white photographs were either taken and/or collected by H.C. Hodgens of Peterborough, Ont. He was presumably an employee of Morrow and Beatty Ltd. Most of the photographs are undated, but those that are dated were taken in 1927 and 1928. Some of the photographs have either written or typed captions. They depict the Mattagami River, Smoky Falls dam and power plant, the paper mill, the rail line as well as unidentified men. Most of the photographs have numbers stamped on their versos from 00 to 96. They have been removed from an album.

The second part of the collection consists of news releases, letters to employees, and other communications created during the 1968 labour dispute between Papermakers and Paperworks Union, Local 256, and the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Co. Ltd. and Kimberly-Clark of Canada Ltd. The material belonged to John Grimshaw, who was the mediator for the dispute.

The collection consists of three letters, two to Joan’s mother, and one to Patsey (Patty) Maclachlan.

Collection of photographs, some with inscriptions in Lithuanian on the reverse, predominately showing soldiers at their barracks. There is one photograph of four nurses. Date range is taken from dated photographs, most are not dated.

The collection consists of correspondence received by H.D. Schwartz (also David and Eva Schwartz) in Brooklyn, New York from family members and acquaintances (Syma Grzebieniarz, D. Segal, R. Szware) in Otwock, Poland. Many of the post cards are self-addressed by H.D. Schwartz. Schwartz was apparently arranging for the immigration of family members from Poland to the United States, and Syma informed him of her activities in this respect. Several cards are stamped Judenrat der Stadt Otwock (and the Polish equivalent).

The correspondence relates to the health of the family members and the writers’ connection to children and family, urging loved ones to keep in touch through letters. Reference is made to Josek and Sara, Syma’s children, who live far away in Luck (under Russian control) and with whom Syma cannot communicate directly. One of the pieces of correspondence seems to be by Sara. It is to “brother” and “sister in law”, probably of Brooklyn. Sara informs them about having a baby. The baby is also a topic in Syma’s correspondence.

Written in Yiddish, the last piece of correspondence is a long letter (dated 20 March [1948]) about the unknown writer’s experiences as he and his family tried to flee and save their lives. It, too, touches on health-related matters, conditions in the ghetto, people and neighbours who were killed by the Germans, the constant threat of being shot, locating people who are lost, and attempts to escape the ghetto to a safer place.

The collection appears not to contain any materials relating to Benevides in World War II. There is a newspaper clipping containing a photograph of her and other Flight Officers in Metz; four group photographs with no date or location noted; an invitation to a base handover ceremony in 1967; a semaphore sheet with Benevides name written on the top; 3 desk signs. The remainder of the collection bears no obvious connection to Benevides. The majority of it is Air Force related however. It includes a photograph and programme for National Air Force Day in Rockcliffe in 1964; a photograph taken at the Officers’ Mess in Downsview in October 1943; photographs of air force personnel and airplanes including a jet; a Christmas card sent from the 3rd Wing, RCAF Station Zweibrücken; military sports day programs and crest, 1945; and other items. Not Air Force related: photograph of officers in the Elgin Regiment in Britain, 1943; photograph of four officers, one with his wife at a garden party in August 1942 (Major H. Duff. Lt. and Mrs. J. Lang, Lt. Col. Archibald).

The collections consists of Prayer Meeting Topic cards and an Active Member Pledge Card.

The collection consists of three letters to Farrer. Two are from his cousin, A.H. Anson, 1910. One is from F.W. Hirst, 7 April 1913. There are also a few news clippings.

This notebook, the property of Hilde Löw, contains stamps of the Bund der Deutschen in Böhmen. Many pages also have postcards (pasted in) and patriotic sentiments written by her acquaintances (Emma Glatz, Camilla Wolf, Berta Hoffman, Lisette Rahn, and others).

The collection consists of two advertisements for land. The first for The Western and London Districts (1843) and the second for the Huron District (1844).

There have been two accruals. The first accrual consists of documents pertaining to the sale of the company. They are: the Report of the Annual Meeting on 28 October 1915 – with sections on bicycles, accessories and skates, motor cars, Canadian military, and the sale of the business in Australia. It includes a balance sheet from 15 July 1915. There are two letters from Arthur E. Watts, County Clerk and Solicitor, Brantford, Ontario, to Donald E. Bridgman of Minneapolis, Minnesota with regard to his stock held in the company. There is a telegram sent by F.F. Henry in Buffalo, New York to Fred G. Atkinson re the sale of the company. Finally there is a five sheet document typed on paper from The Bradstreet Company outlining the history of the company and its sale in December 1915. The second accrual consists of a request for payment letter with invoice dated 1911; an Automobile Accessories Catalogue issued by the company in 1912; and a pamphlet "Soldier-Citizens, Something of the work carried on by the Russell Motor Car Ltd." Written by Catharine Beverley Robertson the illustrated pamphlet outlines the re-retraining of disabled soldiers and was published in 1918.

Sir William Sterndale Bennett, born in Sheffield on 13 April 1816 and died in London, February 1875, the most distinguished English composer of the Romantic school, composing orchestral, chamber, keyboard and choral music.
Gerald Hugh Tyrwhitt Wilson, Baron Berners, born at Arley Park, Bridgnorth on 18 September 1883 and died at Farringdon House, Berks., on 19 April 1950, a composer of ballet, orchestral music and songs, and a writer and painter.
Sir Arthur Bliss, born in London on 2 August 1891 and died there on 27 March 1975, a composer of music for the stage as well as orchestral, choral and vocal works.
Edwin York Bowen, born in London on 22 February 1884 and died there on 23 November 1961, a composer and pianist.
Sir Frederick Bridge, born in Oldbury, 5 December 1884 and died in London, 18 March 1924, an organist, composer, and writer.
Sir Benjamin Britten, born in Lowestoft on 22 November 1913 and died in Aldeburgh, 4 December 1975, a composer, conductor and pianist. He is considered to be the outstanding composer of his generation. His Peter Grimes laid the foundation for a revival of English opera.
Alan Bush, born in London on 22 December 1900 and died in November 1955, a composer of music for the stage as well as orchestral and vocal works, pianist and teacher.

William Crotch, born in Norwich on 5 July 1775 and died in Taunton on 29 December 1847, a composer of vocal, orchestral and chamber music, theorist and painter. A child prodigy, he was one of the most distinguished musicians of his day.
W. Crouch was the uncle of Frederick William Crouch (c1783-1844), author of A Complete Treatise on Violoncello (1826) and his note is addressed to Frederick Crouch.

Sir Walford Davies, born in Oswestry, Shropshire on 6 September 1869 and died in Warington, Somerset on 11 March 1941, an organist, composer and educationist.

Edwin Evans, born in London on 1 September 1871 and died there on 3 March 1945, a music critic for the Pall Mall Gazette (1921-23) and Daily Mail, from 1933 onwards. There are no letters from Evans; only letters addressed to him from three people, including Osbert Sitwell (1892-1969).

Herman Fink, born in London on 4 November 1872 and died there on 21 April 1939, a composer of music for the stage and a conductor.
Gerald Finzi, born in London on 14 July 1901 and died in Oxford, 27 September 1956, a composer of orchestral, choral and vocal works.

Henry Balfour Gardiner, born in London on 7 November 1877 and died in Salisbury on 28 June 1950, a composer of music for the stage as well as choral music and songs.
Sir Edward German was born as German Edward Jones in Whitchurch, Shropshire on 17 February 1862 and died in London on 11 November 1936. He changed his name to avoid confusion with another Edward Jones. He was a composer of comic operas, incidental and orchestral music and songs.
Sir Eugene Goossens, born in London on 26 May 1893 and died at Hillingdon, Middlesex on 13 June 1962, a conductor and composer of stage, orchestral, chamber and vocal music.

Thomas Harper, born in London in 1816 and died on 27 August 1898, possibly also in London, a trumpeter and professor at the Royal Academy of Music. There are no letters from Harper; only letters addressed to him from several people.
Joseph Holbrooke, born in Croydon on 5 July 1878 and died in London on 5 August 1958, a composer of stage, choral, and orchestral music.
Charles Edward Horsley, born in London on 16 December 1822 and died in New York on 28 February 1876, a composer of oratorios.
Herbert Howells, born in Lydney, Gloucs. on 17 October 1892 and died in 1983, a composer of choral and instrumental works, teacher and writer.

John Ireland, born 13 August 1879 in Bowdon, Cheshire and died in Rock Mill, Washington, Sussex, 12 June 1962, a composer of orchestral, vocal, chamber and instrumental music, pianist, and teacher.

Constant Lambert, born in London on 23 August 1905 and died there 21 August 1951, a composer of ballets as well as choral and orchestral works, a conductor and writer.

Sir Alexander Mackenzie, born in Edinburgh on 22 August 1847 and died in London on 28 April 1935, a composer of stage, choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and a conductor.
Sir August Manns, born in Stolzenberg on 12 March 1825 and died in Norwood, London, 1 March 1907, a conductor at the Crystal Palace, London from 14 October 1855 onwards. He became a naturalized British citizen in 1894.
Thomas Moore, born in Dublin, Ireland on 28 May 1779 and died at Sloperton Cottage, near Devizes on 26 February 1852, a poet, musician and composer of songs.

Alfred Novello, born in London on 12 August 1810 and died in Genoa on 16 July 1896, where he was living in retirement, an English music publisher, founder of Novello & Co.

Sir Hubert Hastings Parry, born in Bournemouth on 27 February 1848 and died in Rustington, Sussex on 7 October 1918, a composer of stage, sacred, orchestral and chamber music, oratorios and songs, a scholar and teacher.
Henry Hugo Pierson, born in Oxford on 12 April 1815 and died in Leipzig on 28 January 1873, a composer of choral and stage music and songs who lived most of his adult life in Germany.

Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton on 23 May 1901 and died in Gerrard's Cross, Buckinghamshire on 14 February 1986, a composer, pianist, teacher and writer. He is considered to be the leading English exponent of the symphony in the mid-twentieth century.

Cyril Scott, born in Oxton, Cheshire on 27 September 1879 and died in Eastbourne on 31 December 1970, a composer of stage, orchestral, choral and vocal music, a writer and pianist.
J. S. (John South) Shedlock, born in Reading on 29 September 1843 and died in London on 9 January 1919, a pianist and writer on music.
Sir John Stainer was born in London on 6 June 1840 and died in Verona on 31 March 1901, while on vacation, a musicologist and composer of oratorios and sacred music.

Ralph Vaughan Williams, born in Down Ampney, Gloucs., on 12 October 1872 and died in London on 26 August 1958 a composer, teacher, writer and conductor. He was the key figure in the revival of twentieth-century English music.

Vincent Wallace, born in Waterford, Ireland on 11 March 1812 and died at the Château de Huget, Vieuzos, Hautes-Pyrénées on 12 October 1865, where he was living in retirement, a composer of operas and piano pieces.

Samuel Webbe, born in London c1770 and died there on 25 November 1843, an organist and composer of glees, catches and songs as well as sacred music.
Samuel Sebastian Wesley, born in London on 14 August 1810 and died in Gloucester on 19 April 1876, a composer and organist. He is considered to be the greatest composer in the English cathedral tradition of the eighteenth century.

The collection consists of printed materials including bulletins, newspapers, pamphlets, and election brochures. Some materials from organizations affiliated with FRAP, Comité d'action politique Maisonneuve and Comité d'action politique St. Jacques, are also included.
