The handscroll is an Imperial mandate from the Tongzhi Emperor ( 1856-1875) to the parents of Lu Chuan-Lin (1836-1910), an officer of the court and a Jinshi who passed the highest Imperial examinations. The text which is in Mandarin and Manchu, is written in ink and gold paint upon contiguous panels of blue, fuchsia, gold, cream and purple silk, backed onto sections of laid paper. The edict proclaims a promotion given to a Manchu official. The emperor praises the distinguished service of Lu Chuan-Lin. The scroll is wound around two cedar dowels at both ends, and is tied with multicoloured flat silk ribbon. The scroll is housed in an acid-free box.

Rennell Rodd - Letter to Oscar Wilde

  • RC0763
  • Pièce
  • 1882

The recipient of the letter, Oscar Wilde, wit and dramatist (1854-1900) was a contemporary of Rodd's at Oxford. In 1881 Rodd published a book of verse, Songs in the South. Wilde had this book republished in the United States in 1882, when he was visiting there, by J.M. Stoddart & Co., of Philadelphia. The title was changed to Rose Leaf and Apple Leaf and Wilde wrote an introduction, "L'Envoi". The letter makes no reference to the book but was written to Wilde in the United States.

Repertory theatre collection

  • RC0400
  • Collection
  • 1923-1927

The collection consists of three small scrapbooks, each titled “Milestones”. The collector wrote a table of contents in the front of each scrapbook, listing the dates of performance, the title of the play and the theatre where the performance took place. There is one letter from Fred Jacob to Mrs. Doolittle dated 14 Feb. 1924.

Jacob was the musical and dramatic critic for the Toronto Mail and Empire. He was also a playwright – his plays were collected and published as One Third of the Bill in1925. He died in 1928 at the age of 46 – his obituary in Saturday Night (43, 9 June, p. 6) was written by Hector Charlesworth. His letter concerns Mrs. Doolittle’s performance in Jacob’s play, “Autumn Blooming” performed by the Arts and Letter Club Players. Mrs. Doolittle may be Anne Carew, an English actress who settled in Toronto.

She appears in every play in this collection. This may be her collection or more likely, someone collected it for her. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings and tear-sheets from Saturday Night (mainly reviews), programmes, ticket stubs, autographs and photographs. Most of the items have been pasted into the scrapbooks but some remain loose. There is one photograph postcard of a troupe on stage with “Merry Makers” written on a drum in their midst.

An article on Vaughan Glaser and his career has been printed off the web by archival staff and is located with the collection.

Richard Nisbet manuscript

  • MS045
  • Pièce
  • 1786

The manuscript is titled "Richard Nisbet's Navigation Book". A bookplate bearing his coat of arms and motto (Vis Fortibus Arma) with his initials is affixed to the pastedown of the front board. A smaller binder's mark is affixed in the upper left corner of the front pastedown indicating that the manuscript was bound by T. Hookham of New Bond Street [London]. The front board bears the word "Navigation" embossed in gold. The manuscript contains 177 pages of text with extensive geometric diagrams, some of which have been coloured. A sea chart of the area around the English Channel and Bay of Biscay has been tipped in near the centre of the manuscript.

The collection consists of 10 sepia photographs pasted on board. Most of the photographs are captioned with the names of the men in the photographs. Col. Leach, V.C. is identified as being in one of the photographs. One of them has “Notman Studio” printed on the photograph. There is a photograph of the Wellington Barracks.

Robert Kirkland Kernighan collection

  • RC0858
  • Collection
  • 1928-1933

Mary J. Mason was the sister of Kernighan. She was contacted after her brother’s death by F.E. Page of New Dundee in 1928 with regard to a memorial to her brother and later on for her memories of him. The fonds consists of three letters to Page, and a memoir of Kernighan’s life, death, and funeral (manuscript, 7 pages) sent to Page on 5 September 1933. Page was writing a life of Kernighan. In the memoir, his sister gives his date of birth as 1854. Note: Mason’s hand makes it difficult to read the name of her correspondent; “Page” is assumed but may not be correct.
