General Motors Corporation of Canada and International Union United Automobile Aircraft and Agricultural Implement Workers of America collection

The collection consists of master, local and supplemental agreements between the two organizations. Included is the first collective bargaining agreement recognizing an association of employees (United Automobile Workers, Local 222) at General Motors in April 1937 as well as agreements between various locals and McKinnon Industries and Frigidaire Products. There is also a copy of R.B. Reddoch, "A History of U.A.W. Activities at G.M. of Canada". The photographs are mainly of General Motors executives playing golf.

Vimy Pilgrimage collection

There have been two accruals. The first accrual consists of a telegram, programmes, menus, newspapers, post cards, and a commemorative medal. The second accrual consists of a passport, guidebooks, and a postcard of the Vimy Memorial.

The collection consists of engravings taken from The Illustrated London News, The Canadian Illustrated News, and one from Picturesque Canada: The Country as It Was and Is. There is also one engraving of the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara Falls, Ont. by Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). It is stamped “Printsellers Association” and written under the engraving is: “Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1875, by M. Knoedler & Co. in the office of the Librarian at Washington.” The printed scenes are from Toronto, Goderich and London. Several concern railroads. There is one of the Toronto harbour. All but one are in colour.

The collection consists of various items relating to Labour history.

  • Tie has drawing of a man in chains with the caption: Repeal Taft Hartley Law.
  • Three audio discs were produced for the Canada Department of Labour by the National Film Board of Canada. Their titles are: Technical and Vocational - - -Training in Canada, Unemployment Insurance in Canada, Labour Management in a Changing World. They are for use with filmstrips which are not extant. One audio disc was issued by the Canada Department of Labour. Its title is: Better Together, Main dans La Main.

British legal instuments collection (Late Medival to Post-Regency)

This artificial collection of documents consists of 81 manuscripts, including deeds, charters, instruments of sasine, obligations, letters patent, wills, probate certificates, and manorial court proceedings, placed into 76 separate groupings. Most of the documents are English, concerning Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Devon, Essex, Hampshire (including Isle of Wight), Kent, London, Middlesex, Norfolk, Rutland, Somerset, Suffolk, Surrey, Wiltshire, and Yorkshire. Some are Scottish, from Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire, Clackmannanshire, Edinburgh, Peeblesshire, Perthshire, and West Lothian. One was drawn up in Louth, Ireland while under British rule. Among the notable names occurring in these documents are North of Kirtling, Addington of Harlow, Cotton of Leswade, Primrose of Chester, Paston of Paston, and Shelley of Horsham. Also included, in envelope A, are several pieces of seals which have broken.

This collection of prints and drawings visually documents France and its imperial ambitions, notably the end of the Ancien Régime (Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette), the French Revolution, Napoleon reign’s as Emperor and his defeat in 1815, and Napoleon III and the Second Republic. Descriptions of each print or drawing consists of the title (sometimes supplied), measurement, the names of the artist, engraver, publisher or printer, and the source (sometimes a previous collection or from a museum or publication).

Jonathan Swift collection

The collection consists of memorabilia relating to Swift: copies of one of his letters, copies of notes on the Swift family made by Swift, brochures relating to the celebration of his Tercentenary in Dublin in 1967 and a scrapbook containing photographs of Swift and of people and places associated with him.

James Slater and Frank Haviland collection

The collection consists of James M. Slater's diary and bible and Frank Haviland's photographs of steel structures.

The photographs are black and white, approximately 145 x 90mm of steel structures. The majority of them are related to the Standard Steel Construction company. Many of the photos have notations on the back, most of it in short form; it is assumed the notations are related to the construction. There is one photo of a group of nine men, none of them are identified, but it is titled “Standard Steel, Port Robinson Ont.” The photo is circa 1912. There are three photographs of the Falls View Bridge when it collapsed in 1938 which were taken by John A. Cowan of Welland and sent to Haviland. A few of the older photos also bear his initials.

This collection consists of water supply maps, notes, and plans detailing his work supplying good drinking and disposing of waste water generated by the army. Included are diagrams for building water chlorination/filtration systems in the field, detailed maps, and other notes.

Havens family collection

The collection consists of letters written to Havens and his daughter from family, friends, and business people. There is one letter written by his wife Mary (née Hiscott) when she is away visiting her father who is ill. The letters span four generations: Richards Havens (the father), William (the son), Ciscelia (his daughter) and the Elmes (grandchild and spouse). Many of the letters are written from rural communities in Ontario. There are, however, letters written from the Oakfuskee Hills in Alabama and Emigrant Gap, California.

Fire trucks collection

The collection consists of b&w photographs of fire trucks. There are trucks from the Burlington, Grimbsy, Kamsack, Kelowna, Kentville, Niagara, Niagara Falls, Pickering, Point Claire, Revelstoke, and the Canadian National Parks Fire Departments. Many of the trucks are identified as Bickle trucks. Founded in Winnipeg in 1906, the company had been moved to Woodstock, Ont. becoming Bickle Fire Engines Ltd. in 1922. Four of the photographs are taken by Charles W. Hayrall of Woodstock, Ont. One of the photographs was taken by W.J. Oliver. Most of the photographs are stationary portraits of trucks. Only three of the photographs show any action: two men are atop the Canadian National Parks truck operating the fire hose at a lake; one photograph is of a truck moving down a street; one photograph is of men climbing a fire truck ladder.

Iroquois Falls fire of 1916 collection

Iroquois Falls is a town in Northern Ontario, home to the Abitibi Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd. The Great Fire took place on 28-29 July of 1916. Over one hundred people died.

The collection consists of three photographs all stamped on the verso “British and Colonial Press Ltd., Toronto”. One is of the Abitibi Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd plant. The second has a handwritten caption on the verso: “#18 Iroquois Falls – Bldgs. constructed in 3 weeks with Govt. Relief lumber by voluntary labor by employees of Abitibi Pulp & Paper Co. Standing on the steps are are Messrs. A.J. Hodgson & F.K. Ebbits, members of the Relief Committee at Iroquois Falls.” The third has a handwritten caption on the verso: “#19 General view burned area of Iroquois Falls. Abitibi Pulp and Paper Co. in background.” There is also a postcard photograph of the plant.

Saskatchewan railway construction collection

The b&w photographs depict the survey and construction of secondary rail lines in South Saskatchewan from April to July 1930. They were removed from several pages of an album with the heading “C.P.R. Survey”. Beneath this heading was a photograph of Engine 562. The photographs were taken in Coderre, Alma Lake, Fife Lake, Rockglen and surrounding area. Some of the photographs were printed in Regina. Most of the photographs have descriptive captions written on the verso in pen and pencil in seven different hands with separate numbering sequences. They include photographs of the following: tent camps, pile drivers, horses and wagons (bulldozing, grading), people (including the Chinese cook Jim, Cederic White Rodman, Eddie Sellors, George Lowry, “your son” and “me”), laying of ties and steel, a CPR construction coal shed, surveying, Lake Alma, Coderre, Fife Lake and Rockglen. The rail locations are all south of Regina. The lines that run through Coderre and Alma Lake are abandoned. Rockglen still has a working CPR line although there is an abandoned line just to the west. Fife Lake does not appear on this abandoned rail lines map.

W. H. R. Rivers collection

The collection consists of letters and cards. There are letters from: C. L. Dodgson (1832-1898), mathematician and author, also known as Lewis Carroll, 1873-74; Sir Francis Darwin (1848-1925), botantist and son of Charles Darwin; Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941), social anthropologist and author of The Golden Bough; Andrew Lang (1844-1912), scholar, folk-lorist, and author; Bernard Shaw (1856-1946), playwright; Arnold Bennett (1867-1931), novelist and playwright; and Sir Charles Scott Sherrington (1857-1952), neurologist and Nobel laureate. The collection also contains a letter from Arnold Bennett to Ellery Sidgwick, the editor of the Atlantic Monthly, introducing W.H.R. Rivers to him; an autograph of H. G. Wells (1866-1946), author, and other documents, including two sketches, one in pencil and one in pen and ink. There is also a typescript titled "Memories of Lewis Carroll" by Katharine Rivers, a sister of W. H. R. Rivers. The typescript was published in Library Research News, 3, no. 4 (January 1976).

William Force Stead collection

The collection consists of 6 letters, only one of which is from Stead. There is a letter from Arthur Sherbo who enclosed three of his articles on Christopher Smart. There is one manuscript page by H.W. Powell, a writer of nature notes for the Oxford Times and a typescript biographical sketch of Stead by his son, Julian. There is a pen and ink caricature of Stead done by R. D. Usherwood at Worcester College in 1931; a few news clippings, and an issue of Alumnae Journal of Trinity College which published an article by Stead about T.S. Eliot whom he had baptized into the Church of England. The collection was supplemented by books by Stead and two books belonging to him which have been catalogued.
