Samuel Matthews fonds

The fonds consists of a notebook compiled by Matthews containing the following:

  1. Minutes, 1878-1879, of the Richmond Branch of the Alymer Blue Ribbon Club, whose members were temperance advocates. The minutes of 30 September 1878 note that 236 people had signed the pledge.
  2. Day book, containing financial account, 1879-1882
  3. Farm contracts, 4 April 1882-5 April 1883
  4. List of stock bought, April-August 1883
  5. Other financial accounts, 1883-1884

Matthews, Samuel

The fonds consists of materials mainly relating to his acting and musical career. There are also materials relating to other family members: his parents, his daughter Valerie, the Philps, and the Hessenauers. Bill father’, Raymond, served in World War II, and the fonds contains his bombardier notes as well as some photographs taken in Europe. Bill’s, mother, Elaine hosted an interview programme on television in Kitchener and the fonds contains materials related to her career. His great great grandfather was a bandmaster. His son Trevor has his own fonds, although there are a few materials related to Trevor in this fonds. His great uncles, Herbert and Norman Philp who served in World War I, also have their own fonds.

The fonds consists of recordings of prominent speakers and theorists in the field of Peace and Conflict Studies. Many, but not all, of the recordings were done at McMaster University. The topics covered are wide-ranging, and there is enormous diversity within each series. A small selection of some of the more well-represented topics includes post-secondary education in El Salvador, the arms trade, violence in Sri Lanka, the Middle East, Central America, women and violence, nuclear disarmament, trade unionism in South Africa, and human rights in Guatemala. Some of the speakers are Noam Chomsky, Chief Ovide Mercredi, Ursula Franklin, Mubarak Awad, Helen Caldicott, Ramsey Clark, Joseph Rotblat, Gwynne Dyer and Gene Sharp.

The fonds consists of 8 b&w photographs, some mounted on board, and signed by White. They include an American woodock in its nest; a grasshopper sparrow on a branch, a common tern approaching its nest; eggs in the nest of a veery; a luna moth; a yellow lady’s slipper (2 copies); lily pads and flower. Exhibition cards are pasted on the verso of two of the photographs.

Katharine Birkmyre fonds

The fonds is contained in a green leather album trimmed in gold. It consists of correspondence mostly addressed to Katharine Birkmyre, although a few letters are addressed to her father, Canon Skelton and to her husband. It also includes invitations, dinner menus and autographs, two photographs of the Red Cross Hospital in Gibraltar, and her admission badge to the Royal enclosure at the Ascot races in 1937. There is one letter from Archibald Philip Primrose, Earl of Rosebery and another from Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, both prime ministers, to Henry Birkmyre. Both letters concern Birkmyre's defeats in elections held in 1895 and 1899. There is also one letter from Edmund Gosse, poet and man of letters, addressed to Lady Charnwood. The album has been annotated by Katharine Birkmyre.

The fonds consists of a diary and typescript of the diary transcribed by Dr. Norman Shrive. Passages within the diary include "Sunshine and Storm by a Rifleman,1870" and a brief passage entitled "Journey through Persia and other Eastern countries," written by Corporals R. Murphy and J. Kenderick. Murphy and Kenderick are identified as serving with the 100th Royal Rifles. The diary also contains personal information about Snelling, including family health and business prosperity. There is a page of business transactions from 1873.

Carl Stoyan fonds

The fonds consists of personal and commercial artwork by Stoyan. It includes political materials: a comic mock cover of Jimmy Carter on Time magazine, a drawing of President Ronald Regan with “Greacan Formula Hair Dye”, and a group of political figures and party girls surrounding “Dada Uganda”, i.e. Idi Amin. There are also comic drawings, some titled “Scruff”. Finally, there are a two pieces of commercial art for Cedarbrae Volkswagen in Scarborough and Stan Lanes Sports on the Danforth in Toronto. The work is done in a variety of different mediums: tempra, pen and ink, paint and brush, pentel and felt pens. There are two acetate overlays.

The fonds consists of a constitution and minutes. The constitution, dated 10 August 1953, is written on ten pages of a titled bound book. Most of the book is blank but the last three pages contain minutes of meetings from September to December 1853.
