There are extensive diaries from 1929-1951, including detailed accounts of the Great Depression and the Second World War. International postcard collection

This collection of international postcards was pieced together by Morris Norman, a Toronto chartered accountant and notable collector of Canadiana, over a period of 30 years. The cards were purchased by Mr. Norman from postcard and antiquarian dealers.

There have been four accruals. The first accrual (46-2008) has been arranged primarily by country. In certain cases it was not possible to discern a geographic or national point of origin: ephemera, 224 cards; France and Germany, 152; miscellaneous, 557 cards; other foreign, 106 cards; USA and Mexico, 241; UK and Ireland, 459, totallying ca. 1,639 cards. The second accrual (50-2008) has been arranged as follows: France and Germany, 4 cards ; other foreign, 12 cards ; USA and Mexico, 20 cards; UK and Ireland, 22 cards; uncategorized, 8 cards, totalling 67 cards. The third accrual (11-2010) has been arranged as follows: ephemera, 7 cards; France and Germany, 9 cards; other foreign, 4 cards; USA and Mexico, 22 cards; UK and Ireland, 38 cards, totalling 80 cards. The fourth accrual (2011-43) has been arranged as follows: Australia, 1 card; Austria, Italy, German, Switzerlands, 20 cards; France (North America), 1 card; German origin, 2 cards; Ireland, 1 card; Mexico, 1 card, Spain, 1 card; U.K., 23 cards; U.S.A., 28 cards, totalling 78 cards. This arrangement is a preliminary one, and the postcards may be re-arranged upon further examination.

This collection of Canadian postcards was pieced together by Morris Norman, a Toronto chartered accountant and notable collector of Canadiana, over a period of 30 years. The cards were purchased by Mr. Norman from postcard and antiquarian dealers. The cards cover many subjects: sports; aerial views, transportation; disasters; military; union; police; construction projects; suffragettes; agriculture; businesses; bands and parades; Natives; forestry; etc. Some cards were mass-produced by companies in series, and some were done by local studios and photographers, often at the request of individuals or businesses.

There have been two accruals. The first accrual consists almost entirely of printed materials and ephemera. There is one file folder of typescripts and holograph notes. Included in the collection are the 1946 and 1949 constitutions, pamphlets, programs, election materials for Tim Buck and others, conference reports, and correspondence course outlines. Some of the material was issued by the Toronto and Yorks Committee of the party, others by the Ontario Committee. The majority of the collection consists of printed materials and periodicals from a variety of other organizations, in Canada and abroad. There is one signed petition to the Mayor and Council of the City of Toronto which was organized by the Toronto Councils of Unemployed. The second accrual (17-2001) consists of a cigarette once belonging to Tito, correspondence, a speech, Tim Buck programs, and printed autographed materials concerning Paul Robeson.

Gordon Griffith fonds

The fonds consists of Griffith’s in-flight navigator’s reports of bombing raids over German targets, detailing height, speed, temperature, instrument checks, unusual incidents, bomb release time, course flown, special instructions, and observations, and corresponding course maps. Fifty-two of the maps included in this fonds are World War II Bomber Charts, namely Topographical Maps, Lattice Topographical Maps, Radar Plotting Charts, Plotting Series Maps, Aeronautical Maps, and Canadian Air Navigation Charts. There are also three notebooks.

The fonds also contains an air force uniform (Pilot Officer jacket, trousers, felt “long johns,” two Royal Air Force “blue shirts.”); Griffith’s shoulder boards and air force and officer hats; 5 navigation protractors (3 of which are handmade); various patch badges including air force, army and naval items; and sample plexiglass from an aircraft window; a sample of airframe; field wound dressing (unused); and a sewing kit, for buttons, badges, and repairs.

There is also biographical information about Griffith and his crew (including the correspondence to Kennedy from Bath and an article from McLean's Magazine, September 2009 describing Operation Gisela); Leave Guide for London (a YMCA brochure), an issue of Time and Tide: Independent Non-Party dated 14 April 1945; 7 annotated photographs of the Halifax III and its crew, a Crew Roster for the 76th Squadron RAF for the week ending 22 December 1944.

De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd. collection

There have been two accruals. The first accrual measures 6 cm and covers the period 1943-1992; predominant 1975-1992. It consists of various publications produced by de Havilland, Boeing and Bombardier. They include company, periodicals, calendars, postcards, leaflets and programmes, as well as illustrated product information sheets on the Dash-7 and Dash-8. There are pamphlets on the merger with Boeing and with Bombardier. There is one newspaper clipping about Olivia de Havilland’s visit to Toronto in 1988. There is also an oversize drawing of the de Havilland Mosquito IV printed from The Aeroplane, England, 7 May 1943. The second accrual measures 5 cm, 1927-1958. It consists of photographs, pamphlets and newsletters. There are photographs of the Beaver, Caribou, Chipmunk, Fox Moth, Mosquito bombers, and the Moth. The Caribou was sold to the U.S. Army; many of the photographs are of the Army training.

There have been three accruals. The first accrual consists mainly of World War I and II materials, although there are materials from the American Civil War and Vietnam. It includes Christmas cards, postcards, letters, pamphlets, photographs, and periodicals. Although mainly Canadian and British, other nationalities are represented. The second accrual consists of a few World War I and II items, 3 pennants, a swagger stick, a print and other items, including NORAD materials and photographs. The third accrual consists of photographs, advertising in support of the military, cards and other printed materials, and realia, all from the twentieth century. The fourth accrual is menu in the style of a fan for the Queen's Own Rifles 1912 dinner.

Charles Hibbert Millard collection

Collection consists of photographs of and by Millard. Some of his photographs are of labour marches and strikes. The information in his biographical sketch comes from a recorded interview that William Ready did with him in August 1975. An incomplete transcript of the interview has been typed. The letter from Millard to Harry Waisglass of the Faculty of Business at McMaster contains information about the 1946 Stelco strike in Hamilton, Ontario. It was written on 11 March 1975.

The collection consists of letters written by Magee to Charles and Marion Shaw, 1944-1946. The Shaws were the owners of the North American Leather Company in Omemee, Ontario. There are also letters (typed carbons) from Magee to Dr. Ody and Colonel Harris which may have been enclosed in letters to the Shaws; one letter (a typed carbon) from Shaw to Magee; a draft of an unsigned letter to Sherwood Lett about Magee; and a mimeographed report “Visit to Berlin”, unsigned but by Magee.
