Selkirk family collection

The collection consists of four photographs pasted onto board and one partial news clipping dated 25 December 1896. All photographs have captions in pen. Two of the photographs are of “the old mansion at St. Mary’s Isle, the seat of Lord Selkirk”. One is of “the Selkirk family burial-ground at Galtway”. Finally there is a photograph of a bust by Lord Selkirk by Canova. Antonio Canova (1757-1822) was an Italian sculptor. The news clipping concerns the building of a new mansion at St. Mary’s Isle by Capt. Hope “very nearly on the same spot which the old mansion stood” in 1896.

The collection consists of: an original photograph, the Simcoe family estate in Wolford, England, with a woman, possibly Mrs. Simcoe, on the front lawn; a handwritten copy of a letter from her daughter, Sophia Simcoe, originally written in June 1835, mentioning her mother and Mrs. Scadding; a typewritten extract from an article by Henry Crawford Scadding commenting on an event in Mrs. Simcoe's diary. The dates of creation of the latter two items are not known.

Fair copy in an unknown hand or hands. Commentary on the original manuscript has been added around the margin and on inserted loose sheets. -- Contents page is illuminated in red, gold and blue. Some pages have been bound incorrectly, that is upside down. Text is predominantly Arabic with some Persian. Table of contents is in Persian. The manuscript contains instructions on conduct for living an Islamic life.

The collection consists of transcripts of letters written by Mansfield to her father, Harold Beauchamp, 1916 and 1922, as well as transcripts of some letters written by her father about Katherine Mansfield, 1933-1937. There is also one letter from Isabel C. Clarke to Beauchamp, 1935. The transcripts, all typescript carbons, were presumably made some time after 1937, the date of the last letter.

Pamphlets collection

The overwhelming majority of the collection deals with Canada. The subject matter is varied, and deals with many aspects of Canadian history, literature, social and political conditions. Included are pamphlets on religion and churches, all levels of government, elections, peace movements and war service, Communism, local communities and labour organizations to name but a few of the topics covered. Approximately 250 pamphlets date from before 1867. Several of the pamphlets are in the French language. Some pamphlets in this numbered collection have no relation to Canada; they are mainly British and American although a number of pamphlets concern Cuba and Third World countries. At least one pamphlet about Ireland is in Gaelic; a few pamphlets are in other languages.

Palestine and Israel postcard collection

This collection of postcards pertaining to Palestine and Israel is comprised of two parts.
Part 1: 114 cards produced by Shlomo Narinsky (1885-1960), a Russian-born Jewish photographer, of Holy Land portraits and scenes, printed in sepia photogravure in 1921 by the Jamal Brothers of Jerusalem (numbered 1-118, lacking numbers 82, 106, 108, and 111, but the missing cards were apparently never printed). There are also six other cards from the Middle East, not part of the Narinsky set of cards.

This album contains b&w photographs of Vancouver Island. Locations include: Victoria, Cowichan Bay, Fulford Harbour, Maple Bay, Tent Island, Somenos Lake. It is a family album but the name of the family is not known the family photographs are not captioned. There are two events depicted: a fire and the Siwash Canoe Races. There is one photograph of a Pile Driver owned by the Island Tug and Barge Co. Ltd. There is also one photograph of H.M.S. Apollo in Comox harbor in 1936. The album also contains photographs of Columbia River, Bonneville, Oregon, Skamokawa, Wash., and Mt. Hood, presumably taken on a family vacation. Photographs of Saskatchewan railway construction in 1930 have been removed from this album and form a separate collection.

There have been three accruals. The first accrual consists of microfilmed scripts of dramas produced by the CBC. The original scripts were disposed of after microfilming. The majority of these scripts are of radio plays, although there are some which were produced for televison. Dramatists include Fletcher Markle, W.O. Mitchell, Lester Sinclair, Joseph Schull, Pierre Berton, Len Peterson and George Salverson, among many others. The second accrual consists of printed materials; the texts of speeches broadcast 1940-1941, and pamphlets printed by the CBC describing their programming from 1936-1943. The third accrual consists of 4 audio reels, containing a speech by the Rt. Hon. Arthur Meighen (1874-1960), Prime Minister of Canada, 1920-1921 and 1926, to the Canadian Club in 1936 with an introduction of W.A. Bishop.

Klondike Gold Rush collection

After gold was discovered in Bonanza City in 1896, approximately 30, 000 settlers flooded the Yukon in hopes of finding fortune. The name “Klondike” (or “Klondyke”) refers to a town as well as the area surrounding Dawson City where new residents panned for gold.

There have been three accruals. The first accrual consists of a typescript of letters as well as stereo cards, a postcard and tear-sheets. The second accrual consists of b&w photographs as well as one serviette. The third accrual consists of two photographs.

William Canniff collection

The collection consists of a disbound copy of the History of the Settlement of Upper Canada (Toronto: 1969) with corrections and revisions. Pages 52-64, 250-252, and 272 are missing. This was presumably used as the setting copy for the revised edition of the book, which was published in 1872 as the History of the Province of Ontario.

This collection of international postcards was pieced together by Morris Norman, a Toronto chartered accountant and notable collector of Canadiana, over a period of 30 years. The cards were purchased by Mr. Norman from postcard and antiquarian dealers.

There have been four accruals. The first accrual (46-2008) has been arranged primarily by country. In certain cases it was not possible to discern a geographic or national point of origin: ephemera, 224 cards; France and Germany, 152; miscellaneous, 557 cards; other foreign, 106 cards; USA and Mexico, 241; UK and Ireland, 459, totallying ca. 1,639 cards. The second accrual (50-2008) has been arranged as follows: France and Germany, 4 cards ; other foreign, 12 cards ; USA and Mexico, 20 cards; UK and Ireland, 22 cards; uncategorized, 8 cards, totalling 67 cards. The third accrual (11-2010) has been arranged as follows: ephemera, 7 cards; France and Germany, 9 cards; other foreign, 4 cards; USA and Mexico, 22 cards; UK and Ireland, 38 cards, totalling 80 cards. The fourth accrual (2011-43) has been arranged as follows: Australia, 1 card; Austria, Italy, German, Switzerlands, 20 cards; France (North America), 1 card; German origin, 2 cards; Ireland, 1 card; Mexico, 1 card, Spain, 1 card; U.K., 23 cards; U.S.A., 28 cards, totalling 78 cards. This arrangement is a preliminary one, and the postcards may be re-arranged upon further examination.

The collection appears not to contain any materials relating to Benevides in World War II. There is a newspaper clipping containing a photograph of her and other Flight Officers in Metz; four group photographs with no date or location noted; an invitation to a base handover ceremony in 1967; a semaphore sheet with Benevides name written on the top; 3 desk signs. The remainder of the collection bears no obvious connection to Benevides. The majority of it is Air Force related however. It includes a photograph and programme for National Air Force Day in Rockcliffe in 1964; a photograph taken at the Officers’ Mess in Downsview in October 1943; photographs of air force personnel and airplanes including a jet; a Christmas card sent from the 3rd Wing, RCAF Station Zweibrücken; military sports day programs and crest, 1945; and other items. Not Air Force related: photograph of officers in the Elgin Regiment in Britain, 1943; photograph of four officers, one with his wife at a garden party in August 1942 (Major H. Duff. Lt. and Mrs. J. Lang, Lt. Col. Archibald).
