Academic Robes: Their Usage and History

The compilation on academic robes by McNairn has eight chapters: Academic Finery; The Code for British Hoods; Oxford Robes; Cambridge Robes for Doctors and Graduates (a pamphlet by A. G. Almond); Robes In Other Universities; Cap and Gown in America (a pamphlet by Gardner Cotrell Leonard published in 1896); American System of Academic Robes; College Colours, an article by McNairn published in the University of Toronto Varsity, 19 November 1901.

There have been three accruals. The collection consists of Canadian, American, and British advertisements for products, services and businesses. It includes pamphlets, leaflets, posters, calendars, display cards, trade cards, photographs and proofs.

Albert Mansbridge collection

The collection consists mainly of Mansbridge's letters to Leonard Clark. There are also a few manuscripts concerning Mansbridge, Christmas cards, invitations, and announcements relating to Mansbridge, photographs of Mansbridge, and some pamphlets by Mansbridge. This collection was assembled by his friend Leonard Clark. Clark, an educator, author, editor and poet was born on 1 August 1905 in St. Peter Port, Guernsey. He was made inspector of schools with the Ministry of Education in 1936. He died in London in 1981.

Alfred E. Pease collection

The collection consists of 28 letters to Major John Fairfax-Blakeborough, mainly from Sir Alfred Pease, but also from other members of the Pease family; news clippings; a typed carbon by Pease concerning family history, dedicated to his children; and a typed carbon of a memoir of Pease by Fairfax-Blakeborough, published in April 1964. Fairfax-Blakeborough was an author and journalist who sometimes wrote under the pen name Hambletonian. He was born in Guisborough, Yorks. on 16 Jan. 1883 and, like Pease, was a member of the Cleveland Bay Horse Society. His books concern racing, hunting, and country life.

Alfred Goldsworthy Bailey collection

The collection consists of the typescript of Bailey’s first book of poetry, Songs of the Saguenay and Other Poems, and three other poems (“Autumn Night”, “Belle Isle”, and “Tadoussac without You”). With the exception of one leaf, all leaves are signed by Bailey. The typescripts are on the rectos of each leaf.

Anderson affair at Sir George Williams University collection

The Anderson affair concerns charges of racism against black students by a white faculty member, Professor Anderson. The collection consists of printed materials, including statements, chronicle of events, newspaper articles, posters, and transcripts of the interviews contained on the audio cassettes.

This collection consists of thirteen letters written from England, France, and Belgium. In addition to the letters, is a brief summary of each letter provided by the collector. McGinnis mentions getting the mumps, wounded by shrapnel, and gassed in his letters, among other things.

Boer War stereographs

This collection of stereographic images depicts scenes from the South African War, or Boer War (1899-1902). The images were produced by Underwood & Underwood (and one by the Keystone View Company). The Underwood cards are captioned on the front in English and on the back in English, French, German, Spanish, [Danish?], and Russian. Some of these cards have a more lengthy explanation in English as well. The Keystone View card is only captioned in English, with a lengthy description. It depicts 48th Highlanders of Toronto.

Fair copy in an unknown hand or hands. Commentary on the original manuscript has been added around the margin and on inserted loose sheets. -- Contents page is illuminated in red, gold and blue. Some pages have been bound incorrectly, that is upside down. Text is predominantly Arabic with some Persian. Table of contents is in Persian. The manuscript contains instructions on conduct for living an Islamic life.

British legal instuments collection (Late Medival to Post-Regency)

This artificial collection of documents consists of 81 manuscripts, including deeds, charters, instruments of sasine, obligations, letters patent, wills, probate certificates, and manorial court proceedings, placed into 76 separate groupings. Most of the documents are English, concerning Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Devon, Essex, Hampshire (including Isle of Wight), Kent, London, Middlesex, Norfolk, Rutland, Somerset, Suffolk, Surrey, Wiltshire, and Yorkshire. Some are Scottish, from Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire, Clackmannanshire, Edinburgh, Peeblesshire, Perthshire, and West Lothian. One was drawn up in Louth, Ireland while under British rule. Among the notable names occurring in these documents are North of Kirtling, Addington of Harlow, Cotton of Leswade, Primrose of Chester, Paston of Paston, and Shelley of Horsham. Also included, in envelope A, are several pieces of seals which have broken.
