H.M.S. Carnarvon was a Devonshire-class cruiser of 10,850 tons built for the Royal Navy in 1905. She served in various capacities prior to the start of the First World War, where she was assigned to Cape Verde Station to protect British ships. In October 1914, the Carnarvon was transferred to the South Atlantic where she was part of the Battle of the Falklands, December 1914. Throughout the rest of the war she continued to patrol against German raiders and escort convoys. In 1919, it became a training ship, before being sold for scrap in 1921.

Scope and content
There have been two accruals. The first accrual consists of two night order books, 1914-1915, 166 pages and 1915, 161 pages. The second accrual consists of a bound notebook (40 pages) containing a memoir written by George H.J. Hanks who was a Sick Bay Attendant on the Carnarvon. It was written in 1915 in Montreal while the ship was undergoing repairs and contains an extract from the ship's log for the Battle of Falkland Islands (p. 40). The fonds is supplemented by a transcript of the diary prepared by Robert K. Hanks, available in hard copy and on a CD. It includes additional documentation, including profiles of opposing fleets and maps

The first accrual was purchased at Sotheby's auction, 28 May 1985. The second accrual (03-2003) was acquired in January 2003 from Robert K. Hanks.
