There have been three accruals. The collection consists of Canadian, American, and British advertisements for products, services and businesses. It includes pamphlets, leaflets, posters, calendars, display cards, trade cards, photographs and proofs.

The first accrual consists of six series:

Series 1 is particularly significant, containing 12,000 case files documenting the creation of approximately 50,000 thirty-second radio and television commercials produced by Pirate Group Inc. (Toronto office) and its predecessor companies: O’Reilly Radio Inc., Robert Armes Inc., Shurman Armes Crawford, and The Air Company, from 1981 to 2005. These files document the entire production process from the initial phase through to the finished product, though some files are more complete than others. The material found in the file may include: concept presentations; casting sessions and auditions; ACTRA contracts and other actor contracts; script progression and revision; briefing documents; final recording-day scripts with directors notes; recording session schedules; music demos, final tracks, sheet music and lyrics; production edits; final audio mixes, element breakdown of the recording (voices, sound effects, music); final radio and TV commercials; budget estimates, quotations and final billing; etc.

This collection consists primarily of illustrative labels from cigar boxes manufactured by cigar companies in the United States in the last decade of the nineteenth century when cigar companies became aware of the importance of advertising their products to a large number of discriminating cigar smokers. The major companies were: Geo. S. Harris & Sons, Lith. Phila.; L.E. Neumann & Co.; Schumacher & Ettinger N.Y.; and Schmidt & Co. With regard to Canadian cigar companies, Adam Beck. London Ont. is represented, and there is also a box lid from Joseph Winterhalt of Berlin (now Kitchener), Ont. The labels were lithographed with original designs and often patriotic motifs: young women, historical figures, heroes of battles, native people, sports and leisure, Cuba and the Caribbean, and events of the day. There have been several accruals. The first accrual consists of annual reports, ledgers, catalogues, minutes of meetings, bulletins, circulars, correspondence, photographs, news clippings and other items. The second accrual consists of annual reports, speeches, news clippings, and other printed materials. The third accrual consists of company records, media records, records pertaining to the publication of a company history, and photographs.

There have been three accruals. The first accrual, which consisted of photographic slides and camera equipment, was deacessioned in July 2008. The second accrual (28-1996, 32-1996) measures 1 m, and is arranged into the following series: personal correspondence; legal correspondence and documents; Canadian Red Cross society; Samuel B. Freeman scrapbooks; memorabilia; certificates and awards; photographs and albums. It includes legal correspondence relating to the family property on 341 James St. South. The third accrual (29-1998) measures 3 cm and consists of correspondence, news clippings and a photograph.

The Hurst family fonds consists of textual records (contained in Box 1) and photographs and graphic materials (contained in Box 2). Newspaper articles regarding the Hudson Bay Railway occupy a significant portion of the collection. Written by George Alexander Hurst in the late 1930s and early 1940s, these articles were largely published in the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix and Saskatchewan Commonwealth. Some articles are contained in “University Loose leaf Notebook.” Reports, proposals, and memorandums authored by Hurst and the On-to-the-Bay association are also included, as well as Submissions to the Royal Commission on Co-operatives by The Davison Co-operative Association of Davidson, Saskatchewan, and Hurst’s correspondence with D.J. Munro regarding the railway route. Additional textual material includes George Alexander Hurst’s unpublished manuscript, “Rambles Round the Ram Pasture” and Jean Hurst’s manuscript, “A Librarian’s Recollections Mostly of McMaster, 1944-1987.” Graphic materials include photographs (some contained within two photo albums) of George Alexander Hurst and friends and family, and extensive images of Churchill, Manitoba and its harbour. Notably, there is a photograph of Charles and Anne Lindbergh taken during their 1931 survey flight to Asia, when the couple made stop in Churchill. The fonds contains the following cartographic material: a 1929 map of Manitoba, a map of Southern Manitoba, five maps of Churchill, including the town, river, and harbour, a map depicting freight rates on grain products on Canadian National Railway stations in Manitoba, a 1929 map of the Yukon, and map of Lake Athabasca.

The archives consists of business records, some catalogues, manuals, and other promotional material, as well as photographs and other documents.

This collection consists of company catalogues produced by Canadian firms. The catalogues are mainly from manufacturing companies, although there is one for cattle and there are some retailers. Products manufactured vary greatly from clothing to bicycles, doors, and steam power equipment. Retailers include Birks and Eaton's.

The fonds is arranged in 3 series consisting of: daily journals, condensed journals and travelling diaries.
