Cigar label collection

This collection consists primarily of illustrative labels from cigar boxes manufactured by cigar companies in the United States in the last decade of the nineteenth century when cigar companies became aware of the importance of advertising their products to a large number of discriminating cigar smokers. The major companies were: Geo. S. Harris & Sons, Lith. Phila.; L.E. Neumann & Co.; Schumacher & Ettinger N.Y.; and Schmidt & Co. With regard to Canadian cigar companies, Adam Beck. London Ont. is represented, and there is also a box lid from Joseph Winterhalt of Berlin (now Kitchener), Ont. The labels were lithographed with original designs and often patriotic motifs: young women, historical figures, heroes of battles, native people, sports and leisure, Cuba and the Caribbean, and events of the day. This collection consists of company catalogues produced by Canadian firms. The catalogues are mainly from manufacturing companies, although there is one for cattle and there are some retailers. Products manufactured vary greatly from clothing to bicycles, doors, and steam power equipment. Retailers include Birks and Eaton's.

Saskatchewan railway construction collection

The b&w photographs depict the survey and construction of secondary rail lines in South Saskatchewan from April to July 1930. They were removed from several pages of an album with the heading “C.P.R. Survey”. Beneath this heading was a photograph of Engine 562. The photographs were taken in Coderre, Alma Lake, Fife Lake, Rockglen and surrounding area. Some of the photographs were printed in Regina. Most of the photographs have descriptive captions written on the verso in pen and pencil in seven different hands with separate numbering sequences. They include photographs of the following: tent camps, pile drivers, horses and wagons (bulldozing, grading), people (including the Chinese cook Jim, Cederic White Rodman, Eddie Sellors, George Lowry, “your son” and “me”), laying of ties and steel, a CPR construction coal shed, surveying, Lake Alma, Coderre, Fife Lake and Rockglen. The rail locations are all south of Regina. The lines that run through Coderre and Alma Lake are abandoned. Rockglen still has a working CPR line although there is an abandoned line just to the west. Fife Lake does not appear on this abandoned rail lines map.

There have been two accruals. The first accrual consists of documents pertaining to the sale of the company. They are: the Report of the Annual Meeting on 28 October 1915 – with sections on bicycles, accessories and skates, motor cars, Canadian military, and the sale of the business in Australia. It includes a balance sheet from 15 July 1915. There are two letters from Arthur E. Watts, County Clerk and Solicitor, Brantford, Ontario, to Donald E. Bridgman of Minneapolis, Minnesota with regard to his stock held in the company. There is a telegram sent by F.F. Henry in Buffalo, New York to Fred G. Atkinson re the sale of the company. Finally there is a five sheet document typed on paper from The Bradstreet Company outlining the history of the company and its sale in December 1915. The second accrual consists of a request for payment letter with invoice dated 1911; an Automobile Accessories Catalogue issued by the company in 1912; and a pamphlet "Soldier-Citizens, Something of the work carried on by the Russell Motor Car Ltd." Written by Catharine Beverley Robertson the illustrated pamphlet outlines the re-retraining of disabled soldiers and was published in 1918.

Practically all of the partnership certificates in this collection pertain to publishing, printing, book selling, and allied trades. The certificates were all registered at the Registry Office in Toronto.

Niagara Falls Suspension bridge collection

The collection consists of three letters from the Great Western Railway Co. to J.W. Fisher, Superintendant of the bridge, 1854-55. There are also two letters, 1862, addressed to William G. Swan, Suspension Bridge, Clifton, Ont. and one invoice from Wood & Leggatt, 1873. Finally there is a letter to C. Strut, 1848, with regard to the lumber contract for the bridge.

The fonds consists of b&w photographs removed from an album. They are both family and business photographs. The business photographs include one with a group of men standing in front of a make-shift building with the sign “Robert Miller & Sons, General Contractors”. Many photographs show the construction of what appears to be a lock wall with gates. The family photographs include the following: formal family portraits, one of which is captioned “Young Fred”; vacation photographs at the family cottage north of Toronto – one is dated 1904 – with boats; vacation photographs of a trip out West possibly in the mid to late 1910s, including the Yale Hotel and Stanley Park; photographs of various family members in automobiles with one captioned “Packard?”,possibly mid to late 1910s; lakeships, group on a boat, children playing and other photographs. In addition, the fonds contains the marriage certificate of Fred R. Miller and Edna A. Noxon.
