Biografie
Angela Davis was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and educated at Brandeis University and in Paris. On her return to the United States, she became active in the civil rights campaign. After the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., in 1968, she moved to Los Angeles and completed her Masters degree under Herbert Marcuse. In 1971 she was arrested and charged with kidnapping, murder and conspiracy. She was later acquitted on all charges. She published an autobiography in 1974.

The collection consists of printed materials issued by various committees organized to free Angela Davis in Canada, the United States and Britain, including leaflets, news letters, petitions, posters, and statements, some of them written by Davis, as well as articles about her. The audio materials contain an interview with Davis by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

Part of the collection was acquired from the Toronto branch of the Angela Davis Defense Committee in October 1972. The audio reels (accession 10-1992) were acquired from a student via Victor Nunn.
