The collection consists of correspondence, photographs, post cards, maps, manuscripts, typescripts, orders and other official documents, diagrams, programmes, souvenirs, song-sheets, artwork, leaflets, sound recordings and moving images, and printed materials.

Immediate source of acquisition

Collection was purchased, beginning presumably in 1971 on various occasions from Bertram Rota. Beginning in 1975 records were kept of acquisitions as they arrived. Those acquisitions have been described as separate but related fonds, collections, and items.

Arrangement

The collection is predominantly British. It has been arranged as follows:
alphabetical by personal name (Boxes 1-7), official files (Boxes 8-11), the Carlow aviation collection (Box 12), artwork (Box 13), Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, London, leaflets (Box 14), Ville Libre de Dantzig (Box 15), French and Belgian Generals letters collection (Box 16), printed materials, maps, and other items (Box 17), sound recordings and moving images (Box 18), photographs (Boxes 19-24), albums (numbered 1-73).

In addition to this collection, there are separate collection descriptions and finding aids for posters, trench maps, and songs. This collection is supplemented by books and pamphlets which have been catalogued for Research Collections and maps held by the Map Library. Researchers are also referred to the related fonds, collections, and items most of which have been acquired since 1975. Instead of being added to the collection, they have been described separately. Canadians have been indicated; the remainder are predominantly British.
